The Roundabout Theatre Company has begun work on a $24 million renovation of the Todd Haimes Theatre at 227 West 42nd Street in Times Square, Manhattan. Supported by a $1.9 million investment from the New York State Council on the Arts and Empire State Development, the project represents the first major renovation of the historic venue in nearly three decades. The property is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

Renovations will include an expanded lobby, façade improvements, and a complete restoration of the venue’s interior. Accessibility enhancements feature the installation of an induction loop system to connect with hearing aids, additional wheelchair-accessible seating, and modernized restrooms and elevators. The theater will also receive infrastructure upgrades, such as new safety systems and resilient flooring and carpet replacements.

Founded in 1965, Roundabout Theatre Company welcomes more than 200,000 attendees annually and provides arts education programs to thousands of students. The Todd Haimes Theatre, named for the organization’s longtime artistic director, is a key part of Roundabout’s portfolio.

“This renovation and accessibility project will create an inclusive visitor experience and welcome a wider audience to Broadway,” said Erika Mallin, executive director of the New York State Council on the Arts. “With accessible venues like these, our arts and culture can continue to be a powerful engine for our shared health and prosperity: creating jobs, driving tourism, and attracting artists and creators from all across the globe right here to New York.”

  1. Why is there so much scaffolding and sheds in Times Square. Looks terrible and very unsafe.

$27 million for a major renovation but the government needs $85 million to renovate the Delcorte Theatre in Central Park. Apples to oranges? Perhaps, but the fact that such an extensive renovation can cost so much less than updating an outdoor theatre is telling.
