Construction has topped out on The Lucy, a 24-story residential building at 619 Grove Street in the Horseshoe section of Jersey City, New Jersey. Designed by Michael Graves Architecture and developed by SJP Properties, Claremont Development, and Battery Global Advisors with equity partner PCCP, the structure will yield 444 rental units, with 13 reserved for affordable housing. The project will also preserve portions of the site’s historic St. Lucy’s Roman Catholic Church, rectory, and school. The property is located at the corner of Grove and 16th Streets.

Renderings show a glass curtain wall with beveled metal paneling and a triangular southeast corner cantilever overhanging the church steeple. A rear cutout will form an interior courtyard within the U-shaped footprint, and the western lot-line wall will be clad in gray aluminum paneling. Restored stained-glass windows will feature in the lobby, and the original church doors will remain the main entrance, along with the iron fence, tower bell, and façades of two historic walls.

Amenities will include a rooftop pool, sky lounge, sundeck with grills, and penthouse bar, plus a fitness center, media and game room, coworking and conference rooms, dog grooming room, lounges with fireplaces, hydroponic garden, and a speakeasy in the historic bell tower. The property will provide shuttle service to the PATH station.

St. Lucy’s Parish was founded in 1884 to serve the Horseshoe’s Irish immigrants. Its Romanesque Revival church, designed by Jeremiah O’Rourke and completed in 1895 with a 145-foot bell tower, joined the 1890 school and 1904 rectory. Vacant since the parish’s 1985 suppression, the Archdiocese of Newark owned the complex until its sale to 15th and Grove JC LLC. The team completed a 165-bed transitional housing facility at 612 Grove Street in 2023.

The Lucy’s anticipated completion date is slated for 2028.

This would have made more sense if the church had been more distinguished in design.
