Long Island City’s retinue of high-rises is rapidly expanding, and 41-42 24th Street will be another addition. Permits were just issued for the 21-story tower, which will eventually hold 421 units; the architect of record is Perkins Eastman, and the developer is Westside LIC.
Perkins Eastman has a very good track record with regards to aesthetics, and the firm’s 160 East 22nd Street is just finishing up in Manhattan; given their pedigree, 41-42 24th Street’s appearance will likely be a notch above typical new developments in Long Island City. While infill is necessary and vital to the neighborhood’s growth, projects that are visually appealing are also needed – and this building should fit that bill.

The new building will stand 228 feet, and will have just over 8,700 square feet of retail on the ground floor; a crucial component to energizing Long Island City’s pedestrian sphere, which remains desolate. Given the building’s bulk and size – obvious in the aerial of the development – it will be a transformative anchor for the vicinity.
