YIMBY was lucky enough to be in Court Square on Monday, the evening prior to 5Pointz’ whitewashing. The following photos show 5Pointz in its final hours as an unofficial graffiti mecca, and offer a last glance at the now-removed artwork.
Wolkoff’s whitewashing of the warehouse makes sense, given how quickly the graffiti could be covered over – and now the entire matter has been resolved.
The ending is an ironic twist to the saga, with the Wolkoffs layering the final coating of paint. Its finality also shows how futile the struggle was, as the ‘artists’ amounted to glorified squatters, attempting to take possession of something that was not theirs; a compilation of voluntarily-scrawled illustrations of no perceived commercial value.
Despite the opposition’s efforts, a federal judge ruled in favor of the Wolkoff’s on the 8th, paving the way for demolition. Graffiti enthusiasts on-site were adamant that their fight would continue, but – as Tuesday morning’s sunrise made clear – that hope was obviously misplaced.
