The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission is reviewing a proposal to renovate two buildings on Governors Island. Designed by Robert D. Henry Architects, the project involves the construction of new ADA entryways and poolside lighting fixtures for the property, which is operated by QC NY Spa. The structures, referred to in the proposal as Buildings 111 and 114, are located at 111 Andes Road and 114 Governors Island, adjacent to Soissons Landing and the ferry to Manhattan.

If approved, Building 111 will receive a new ADA-compliant ramp and entryway, along with a new kitchen roof exhaust system. Building 114 will also get a new ADA ramp and entry. The diagram above shows the new lighting fixtures placed around the corners of the existing pools on the property.

The below images show Building 114’s eastern elevation from 2019, before the spa was constructed, followed by the modified ADA-accessible entrance.

For the most part, the changes outlined will be non-intrusive to the properties, leaving their core structures effectively the same.

  1. I know they are needed and required but man I hate the look of ADA ramps.

This is so poorly designed with no effort to make it look better. Slope the ground and landscaping with a sidewalk up to the front door. This shouldn’t be so difficult.

    • Where do you propose they slope the ground? The one along Building 111 is especially tight and the surrounding road is sloping as well – they would need to rip up and fill a lot. Sloping to Building 114 would require a path right through the courtyard where they have lounge chairs.

  3. What the hell is a spa for the rich doing in a City Public Park.

I had no idea this existed. This should be removed immediately, and turned into woods.

The main structure appears to be untouched, which is directly involved in this change: Thanks.
