A new $20 million semiconductor research and development center is set to be constructed on the Stony Brook University campus in Suffolk County, Long Island. The project is being developed in collaboration between Stony Brook University and onsemi, the largest U.S.-based silicon carbide power semiconductor manufacturer. Supported by a public-private partnership, funding comprises an $8 million operational investment from onsemi and a $2 million grant from Empire State Development, with Stony Brook contributing $10 million toward renovations and equipment. The facility will be housed on the university’s West Campus Engineering Quad and is expected to be operational by early 2027.
The new center will focus on advancing silicon carbide (SiC) crystal growth, processing, and metrology, contributing to cost reduction and improved quality in SiC power electronics used in high-performance and clean energy systems. It will serve as a research and training hub for university students and professionals and will be available to industrial partners through consortium agreements.
Stony Brook University will also introduce new academic programs including a graduate certificate and a master’s degree in silicon carbide and wide bandgap semiconductors. Leading the new center will be professor Michael Dudley, a long-time expert in SiC technologies, joined by professors Balaji Raghothamachar and Dilip Gersappe from the Department of Materials Science & Chemical Engineering.

Great news. Now the ten thousand Chinese nationals who both work there and go to school there can very easily steal intellectual property and send it to China. Which is exactly what’s going to happen.
