Excavation is underway at 282-284 4th Avenue, the site of a 14-story residential building in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Designed by ND Architecture, the 153-foot-tall structure will span 33,261 square feet and yield an undisclosed number of units with interiors by Input Design Studio. The project may also include ground-floor retail space. The property consists of two abutting mid-block parcels located between 1st and Carroll Streets.

The above rendering from the construction board previews the main southern elevation, which will be clad largely in red brick framing a grid of floor-to-ceiling windows, with a pattern of broad arches staggered at two-story intervals over dark metal spandrels. A column of balconies with rounded corners runs down the entire brick face of the building, and additional outdoor space is present in the form of a terrace atop the 13th-story setback. The final story behind the setback is enclosed in dark metal paneling, and the structure culminates in a flat roof with a short bulkhead.

Excavators are currently digging behind the sidewalk fence, with the bulk of progress toward the back of the lot.

The property was formerly occupied by three vacant low-rise structures, as seen in the below Google Street View image from before their demolition.

While the project’s current developer remains unclear, records list Abraham Waldman as the most recent owner, securing the property for $7.85 million in a transaction arranged by Ariel Property Advisors. The site was previously purchased by Francis Leung in 2019 for $5 million.

YIMBY’s report from June 2022 covered a previous plan for the project led by developer FKAL Management with a design by Angelo Ng + Anthony Ng Architects. This building would have stood ten stories and yielded 33 units along with ground-floor commercial space.

The nearest subway from the development site is the R train at the Union Street station to the north along 4th Avenue.

282-284 4th Avenue’s anticipated completion date is slated for summer 2026, as noted on site.
