Freedom Village, a new $54 million affordable housing development at 270 East 2nd Street in the Alphabet City section of Manhattan’s East Village, has officially opened. Designed by JCJ Architecture and developed by Barrier Free Living, the 13-story building contains 74 apartments for survivors of domestic violence and older adults who have experienced homelessness. The project replaces a former school building that had served as transitional housing for roughly three decades and marks a return to the site where Barrier Free Living was founded in 1981.

The property is located between Avenues C and D, directly across from East Houston Street and Hamilton Fish Park.

All apartments are affordable to households earning at or below 30 percent of the area median income (AMI). Residents are eligible for on-site supportive services provided by Barrier Free Living, including case management, health-related services, and connections to community resources. Operating funding for the units is supported through the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative and administered by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

All apartments are fully accessible for residents with disabilities, and six units include additional accommodations for residents with hearing or vision disabilities. Other features include extra-wide hallways and elevators, community and program space, offices for supportive service staff, and a rooftop recreation terrace with a tenant-operated garden.

The development was built to Enterprise Green Communities standards and incorporates electric heating and cooling systems along with other energy-efficient design elements.

The closest subways from Freedom Village are the F, M, J, and Z trains at the Delancey Street–Essex Street station.
