Freedom Village Completes Construction at 270 East 2nd Street in Manhattan’s East Village

Freedom Village, a new $54 million affordable housing development at 270 East 2nd Street in the Alphabet City section of Manhattan’s East Village, has officially opened. Designed by JCJ Architecture and developed by Barrier Free Living, the 13-story building contains 74 apartments for survivors of domestic violence and older adults who have experienced homelessness. The project replaces a former school building that had served as transitional housing for roughly three decades and marks a return to the site where Barrier Free Living was founded in 1981.

Phase One Of Battery Coastal Resiliency Project Finishes In Lower Manhattan

The first phase of the Battery Coastal Resilience project is now complete at The Battery in Lower Manhattan. The $200 million phase, which was led by NYC EDC, NYC Parks, and the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice, rebuilt and elevated a portion of the wharf promenade to help protect the park from projected sea-level rise through 2100.

LPC Unveils New Historic District Markers In Longwood, The Bronx

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has unveiled four new historic district markers commemorating the Longwood Historic District and Longwood Historic District Extension in Longwood, The Bronx. The markers recognize the architectural and historical significance of the neighborhood, which was designated by the LPC in 1980, with the extension added in 1983.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is set to review a proposal for alterations and a rooftop addition at 144 West 80th Street, a four-story townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Designed by DTLS Architecture, the project involves modifications to both the front and rear façades, along with the construction of a setback penthouse addition designed to minimize visibility from the street.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is set to review a proposal for new two-story commercial building at 144 Spring Street in Soho, Manhattan. Designed by BKSK Architects for 144 Spring Holdings LLC, an affiliate of City Urban Realty, the proposal replaces an earlier glass-clad design approved by the LPC in 2016 and designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The property is located at the corner of Spring and Wooster Streets within the Soho-Cast Iron Historic District.

In Plain Sight, a free, yearlong public art exhibition, opened June 4 at Brooklyn Army Terminal and the Brooklyn Wholesale Meat Market in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Curated by Debra Simon of Debra Simon Art Consulting in partnership with NYCEDC and WXY architecture + urban design, the exhibition features 12 Brooklyn-based artists and uses the waterfront industrial campus as a site-specific canvas.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is set to review plans for the adaptive reuse of the landmarked Williamsburg Savings Bank Tower at One Hanson Place in Downtown Brooklyn. Assembled by BSE Global and Acheson Doyle Partners Architects, the proposal would convert portions of the building’s landmarked banking hall and related interior spaces into a Casa Tua Cucina food hall and dining destination while retaining and working around significant historic features of the interior.

New York City Moves Forward On 34th Street Busway In Midtown, Manhattan

New York City is set to move forward with a long-delayed busway on 34th Street between Ninth Avenue and Third Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan. The plan is intended to improve travel times for more than 28,000 daily bus riders while enhancing street safety, freight movement, and emergency vehicle access. The initiative builds on the city’s previous bus-priority projects, including the 14th Street busway.

Two Queens rezoning proposals are moving into the public hearing phase before the New York City Planning Commission, marking the next step in the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). The applications, known as the 100-12 Queens Boulevard Rezoning in Forest Hills and the 50-02 Queens Boulevard Rezoning in Woodside, would facilitate the development of new mixed-use residential projects that together would add more than 640 housing units to the borough, including over 160 income-restricted apartments.

Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects and developed by Local Development Group, the red-brick building will include 98 studio to three-bedroom condos and more than 18,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities. The property is located between Coney Island Avenue and East 8th Street, diagonal from the southwest corner of Prospect Park.
