Yesterday, major news was announced regarding Mary Anne Gilmartin’s departure from Forest City Ratner, as she joined forces with Robert Lapidus and David Levinson to form L&L MAG, a new venture that will draw on the talents of all three executives and a host of other talent. The firm also launched its new website, which features a fresh rendering of the full build-out of the Pacific Park mega-project, surrounding Barclay’s Center in Downtown Brooklyn, which has undergone substantive changes to its final appearance, including the addition of what could become one of the neighborhood’s tallest towers.

The West Side’s building boom has been nothing short of transformative over the past few years, resulting in two new residential buildings of over 1,000 units apiece. While The Moinian Group’s Sky opened in 2016, TF Cornerstone’s 606 West 57th Street is also closing in on the finish line. With leasing expected to begin in a few months, YIMBY has word that the tower has officially been named The Max, in honor of Max Elghanayan.

There, at 550 Clinton Avenue, Morris Adjmi Architects is designing a new 29-story residential tower, which went before the LPC for review yesterday.

New York YIMBY’s 2018 Construction Report: New Building Applications Finally Stabilize After Two Years of Massive Drops

Last year, YIMBY’s pipeline report showed a dramatic decrease in new building filings, with 2015’s multi-family count of 32,702 units falling precipitously, to 19,356 in 2016. Fortunately, the hemorrhaging of pipeline additions has nearly come to a complete stop, and 2017 saw filings for 19,180 multi-family units, a drop of under one percent. The Williamsburg development boom continues apace, and today YIMBY has the details for a mixed-use project that is coming to 72 South Second Street. T.F. Cusanelli & Filletti Architects in collaboration with INNOCAD architecture will be designing the building, which will result in a completely refurbished corner fronting directly onto Wythe Avenue, and we first reported on the DOB applications back in September of 2016.

Why New York City’s Rapidly Rising Snowfall Totals Are No Holiday Miracle

When “White Christmas” was written in 1942, Irving Berlin had good reason to yearn for the snows “just like the ones [he] used to know.” Measurements of the white stuff in Manhattan had been slumping since the late 1800s, with the 15-year rolling median of 35.5 inches from 1884 falling to a mere 15.6 inches by the year of the song’s release, and then plunging further, to only 13.4 inches in 1998-99. What has followed is nothing short of a holiday miracle: in the subsequent eighteen years, snowfall has increased in an unprecedented fashion across much of the Northeastern seaboard, with the rolling median at Central Park now reaching 40 inches. With New York City’s median recent snowfalls tripling in a matter of two decades and surpassing totals at the end of the Little Ice Age at the same time that temperatures have continued to warm, it is time for the city’s inhabitants to ask why exactly this is happening, and consider the practical implications that a rapidly-shifting climate will have on real estate.
