Steven Holl-Designed Hunters Point Library Rises On The Long Island City Waterfront

Literacy is the cornerstone of modern society, and libraries stand as the foundations of thriving communities. While Long Island City’s rebirth manifests itself through its skyrocketing skyline, its most significant public building steadily rises at the waterfront. The Steven Holl-designed Hunters Point Library will join the iconic gantries and the Pepsi-Cola Sign to form the borough’s new public face, while becoming a new focal point for the rapidly growing community.

Foundation Work Underway At 27-17 42nd Road, Long Island City

The story of development at 27-17 42nd Road is a testament to the ongoing rapid change within Long Island City’s landscape. When Star Tower was first proposed in 2008, it would have lived up to its name by shining on the Court Square skyline as its tallest residential building, offering luxury unmatched by any competitor in the area. As foundation work is underway for its successor, the neighborhood is at a point where a 25-story tower becomes infill, obscured by taller neighbors from nearly all directions. The perimeter basement wall appears complete, and work is in progress on interior foundations. The Department of Buildings lists 184 condominium units spread across 221,266 square feet of floor space. Hiwin USA is listed as the owner of the property while Milestone Construction is the contractor. When the 258-foot-tall building opens its doors in 2017, it will barely make a dent on the skyline, yet it will successfully fulfill its urban role as a building that respects its neighbors while maintaining an independent identity.

Construction Underway At Bottega Veneta’s 740 Madison Avenue Boutique, Upper East Side

Construction of the 24,000-square-foot Bottega Venetta boutique store is in full swing at the intersection of Madison Avenue and East 64th Street. The retailer will occupy 740 Madison Avenue along with 23 and 25 East 64th Street. It acquired the property from the Wildenstein family of international art dealers in the fourth most expensive lease of 2014, with an estimated rent of $8 million. Sitting one block east of Central Park and a few blocks north of the Billionaires’ Row rising along 57th Street, the site is within the Upper East Side Historic District, meaning that the developer had to engage in a delicate design and approval process before starting work on the three 19th century buildings.

Long Island City’s 43-25 Hunter Street Rises Two-Thirds Of The Way To Its Final Height

As warm weather ushers the beginning of March, Rockrose Development’s 43-25 Hunter Street in Long Island City stands over 35-stories-tall. At 509 feet, the tower will become the fourth tallest in Queens upon its completion in 2017, when its 974 units will make it one of the city’s largest residential buildings.

The stunningly tall towers rising along 57th Street are taking the Manhattan skyline to a whole new level. Despite their relatively small footprints, some projects are actually replacing true architectural gems. Between the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2016, the LeFrak Organization and Vornado Realty leveled three pre-war buildings at 27-33 West 57th Street. Although the latest reports indicated a “seven star hotel,” final plans are still unknown. Given the site’s Billionaires’ Row location and proximity to Central Park, whatever gets built will most likely be very tall, and very expensive.

In a testament to Long Island City’s dizzying pace of development, the title passes to Tower 28, previously known as 28 on 28th.

The Phantom Of Times Square: A Century Of Radical Change At 701 Seventh Avenue

The year 2015 marked the near-complete demolition of Times Square’s second oldest structure. The Columbia Amusement Co. Building, which opened at Times Square’s northeast corner on West 47th Street in January 1910. 701 7th Avenue was known by a variety of names during its century-long life span. Like the slightly older yet much more famous One Times Square at the opposite end of the square, the building engaged in the neighborhood’s classic disappearing act, where giant billboards seen by millions made their renovation-scarred hosts all but invisible. But behind the ads, standing on a 16,000-square-foot lot, was a building with a history as dramatic and diverse as that of the famous square on which it stood.
