Proposals from FXCollaborative reveal scaled-back plans to renovate and repurpose a landmarked church on Manhattan’s Upper West Side into a new museum. During the public meeting on Tuesday, June 9, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) unanimously approved the revised plans for the historic property at 361 Central Park West to serve as the home of The Children’s Museum of Manhattan.
Construction activity is underway at 460 West 41st Street, a 164-foot-tall mixed-use building in Midtown West. Designed by FXCollaborative and developed by Covenant House, the 80,290-square-foot edifice will contain 53,053 square feet dedicated to community facility space and 60 units averaging approximately 884 square feet. This is the first supportive housing development by Covenant House in 48 years and includes help from for-profit entities Gotham Organization and Denham Wolf Real Estate Services.
The superstructure of 185 Broadway is now several floors above ground in the Financial District. Designed by FXCollaborative and developed by SL Green, the 260,000-square-foot development will top out at 31 stories and bring more than 200 rental apartments and flagship retail space to Lower Manhattan.
Work has been moving along quickly on the glass and brick curtain wall of One Willoughby Square, aka 420 Albee Square, a 495-foot-tall office skyscraper in Downtown Brooklyn. Designed by FXCollaborative and developed by JEMB Realty, the 34-story reinforced concrete structure topped out last October and has since been rapidly enclosed in its blue-colored envelope. The project is the tallest new office building in Brooklyn and will yield 500,000 square feet of Class A office space. Gilbane Building Company is in charge of construction.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) and local Community Board 7 have again failed to approve proposals to renovate and enliven an abandoned church that has been proposed as a new home for the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. Located on the Upper West Side at 361 Central Park West, the First Church of Christ Scientist was originally completed around 1903, then designated a New York City landmark in 1973.
