As the New York City Landmarks Preservation works to clear the backlog of items on its calendar for consideration since before 2010, it has mostly dealt with buildings, a.k.a. potential individual landmarks. However, there have been some interiors considered, such as the Osborne Apartments lobby. Another such case is the Edgar J. Kaufman Conference Center at 809 United Nations Plaza in Midtown East.

A former church (that was several things before that) is slated for a massive makeover and conversion, and we know what it will look like, thanks to the above photo. 599 Willoughby Avenue (a.k.a. 599-601 Willoughby Avenue) in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, formerly home to the Hebron Baptist Church, is set to become 16 residential units (though the math in the filing is a tad confusing).
Last week, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held the fourth and final public hearing to deal with the 95 properties that have been under consideration for designation prior to 2010. Among the items discussed on Thursday were three houses, geographically spread from Kips Bay to Murray Hill to the Upper East Side. If designated as landmarks, they’ll certainly be referred to by many as historic houses. If not, their very existence will be put into doubt.
A four-story building dating back to well before the Civil War, but in quite the state of disrepair, won’t be demolished just yet. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission decided not to approve a proposal to demolish the structure at 327 Bleecker Street and replace it with a new four-story structure. While the commissioners did seem to be open to the demolition, especially given the endorsement of the Department of Buildings, the proposed replacement was not deemed appropriate.
