Preservationists Battle Bergdorf Goodman Over Future Of Midtown Headquarters

The future of the Bergdorf Goodman department store was one of the subjects of a contentious public hearing at the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Thursday. The commission is in the process of dealing with its 95-item backlog and began held the first day of public hearings for properties in Manhattan (the second and final hearing is November 12). Not surprisingly, the battle pitted preservationists against the building’s owner.

Permits Filed: 32 Residential Units Coming To 26 East 19th Street, 730 East 32nd Street, Flatbush

Permits have been filed to build two new residential buildings in Flatbush, Brooklyn. They are at 26 East 19th Street and 730 East 32nd Street.

New Look for Mixed-Use Building at 2230 Broadway, Upper West Side

When we last brought you news from the corner of Broadway and West 80^th Street, there were plans for a 14-story mixed-use building at no. 2230 (a.k.a. 2228-2236 Broadway). Now, things have changed, and work is underway on a taller building with more residential units and a bit of a different look.

Plan to Remake West 29th Street Halted by Time, Lack of Quorum

There is a plan in the works that would drastically change West 29^th Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue. It involves six buildings in total, including two individual landmarks, and includes one 64-story mixed-use tower. The plan, being developed by HFZ Capital and the Collegiate Churches of New York, was presented to the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday. Members of the public testified, but by the time that happened, it was about 6 p.m. and, not having a quorum, no action was taken and the matter was tabled.

Landmarks Okays Extension for NoMad Hotel at 1164 Broadway

The NoMad Hotel at Broadway and West 28th Street is one step closer to getting a bit bigger. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved an addition for the trendy hotel. That addition at 1164 Broadway will match the 147-foot height of the existing building at 1170 Broadway and is about the height of a planned hotel at 1162 Broadway.

Details Hamper Approval Of New Home At 361 Macon Street, Bed-Stuy

A new four-story home is probably coming to the vacant lot at 361 Macon Street in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant/Expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District, but not quite yet. With some commissioners absent and those present unable to reach a consensus, the Landmarks Preservation Commission took “no action” on the proposed home in their session on Tuesday. Materials, construction, and inspiration for details were among the issues that hampered approval.

Advocates Clash Over Sailors’ Snug Harbor Historic District On Staten Island

On Thursday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held its second public hearing in an effort to clear its decades-long backlog of items proposed for designation. The day’s items were those on Staten Island, and they included the proposed Sailors’ Snug Harbor Historic District. The 80-acre property has been on the calendar for over three decades and while the majority of those who spoke on Thursday supported designation of the district, there wasn’t unanimity.

With Rooftop Pergola Gone, South Street Seaport Pier 17 Plan Sails Past Landmarks

One of the most controversial developments in Lower Manhattan got a big thumbs up from the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday. The LPC approved the Howard Hughes Corporation plan for Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport, which includes demolition of the Link Building. A big point of contention when the plan was presented in August was a proposed rooftop pergola. With that removed, commission approval was a snap. Tuesday’s presentation also revealed some new renderings of the site.

More Appropriate Design For Meals on Wheels Building at Seaview Hospital Site on Staten Island Wins Over Landmarks

Meals on Wheels of Staten Island will be getting a new home, thanks to Tuesday’s approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The beloved organization has outgrown its home in Richmond County and the city found it a site at the former Seaview Hospital tuberculosis treatment campus, which sits in the New York City Farm Colony – Seaview Hospital Historic District. The address is listed as 460 Brielle Avenue. In July, a presentation was made to the commission, but it was found to be too industrial for the setting. The revised design easily won over the commissioners.
