Two weeks ago, the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated 11 of its 12 calendared properties in Midtown East as city landmarks, part of its Greater East Midtown Initiative. On Tuesday, the twelfth site received its designation, as the LPC declared the former Citicorp Center, now known as 601 Lexington Avenue, a city landmark.
In September, the Landmarks Preservation Commission put the Morningside Heights Historic District on its calendar. The next step, a public hearing, was held on Tuesday, and dozens showed up. While there was some opposition, most who spoke rose to support designation of the proposed district.
A nearly century-old garage in the West Village could almost double in size, but the Landmarks Preservation Commission first needs to approve it. Before that can happen, the proposed expansion of 771 Washington Street will need to be refined, the commission said last Tuesday.
Pearl Paint, an icon at the northern edge of TriBeCa, closed over two years ago, pushed out because the rent was too high. The larger of its buildings, at 304-306 Canal Street, is already under redevelopment. Now, the Landmarks Preservation Commission is overseeing the redevelopment of 308-310 Canal Street. The agency held a public hearing on it last Tuesday, but no approval was granted.
There are actually many parts of New York City that feel much suburban than city-like. One of them is Douglaston, Queens, and its residents are getting new neighbors. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved construction of a new single-family house at 233-33 38th Drive.
