Architects Tout Gansevoort Market Plan As Return to History

In November, a plan for a commercial revitalization of the south side of a block of Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, went before the Landmarks Preservation Commission. In a rare, but hardly unheard of occurrence, the hearing was paused before the commissioners could discuss the proposal. With the continuation of that session likely to come soon, YIMBY sat down with the architects behind it to talk about its place in the history of the area.

Landmarks Rejects Renovation Of 348 Lafayette Street, NoHo

The proposal to renovate a commercial building in the NoHo Historic District didn’t fly with the members of the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday. The LPC rejected the proposal presented for 348 Lafayette Street, located on the southwest corner of Lafayette and Bond streets.

A charming little townhouse amongst much larger neighbors on one of Manhattan’s great boulevards will stay just that, for the time being. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission decided not to approve proposed additions to 890 Park Avenue, located on the west side of the street between East 78th Street and East 79th Street, in the Upper East Side Historic District.

Market Diner Being Demolished To Make Way For Apartments At 572 Eleventh Avenue

For decades (with a brief break), Manhattan had a diner, complete with outdoor seating and a tiny parking lot, near the edge of Midtown West/Hell’s Kitchen. Last year, we learned that the Market Diner at 572 Eleventh Avenue (at the corner of West 43^rd Street) would be replaced by an apartment tower. Now, a photo from our friend Tectonic shows that demolition has begun.

Ground Broken for 99 Hudson Street, Jersey City, To Be New Jersey’s Tallest Tower

On Thursday, at a little before noon, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for 99 Hudson Street in Jersey City. Located on a site bounded by Hudson, Grand, Greene, and York streets, the 900-foot-tall mixed-use condominium tower will likely be the tallest building in the state and one of the tallest residential buildings in the entire country. The event not only kicked off construction, but also provided a venue to show off new renderings of the project.

Landmarks To Hold Public Meeting February 23 On Backlog Items

In the fall of 2015, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission held a series of four special public hearings to deal with its backlog of 95 items that have been on its calendar since before 2010. Now, the next step, a public meeting, will be held on Tuesday, February 23.

Previewing the Views from 172 Madison Avenue, Midtown East

We last checked on the condominium development at 172 Madison Avenue, at the northwest corner of East 33^rd Street in Midtown East, only two weeks ago. Since then, the building has grown in height – from 28 stories to 29 – and more glass has been installed. And now we have a sneak peek at the views from the soon-to-be 33-story building.

It was in July of 2014 that YIMBY brought you word of plans for the site of an office building at 199 Jay Street, at the corner of the small section of Nassau Street before the Manhattan Bridge ramps, in Downtown Brooklyn. A month later, we showed you a rendering of the project. Since then the existing building was demolished. Other than that, however, the project has barely pierced the ground, as seen in photos sent to us by our friend Tectonic, and it has a long way to go before it achieves its 33-story design.

Landmarks Not Ready To Approve New Three-Family House At 348 Clermont Avenue, Fort Greene

A new residential building is probably coming to a vacant lot on Clermont Avenue, between Lafayette and Green avenues, in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Historic District. It just won’t be quite what was proposed to the Landmarks Preservation Commission on last Tuesday. The commission did not approve the plan for a three-family, four-story structure at its public hearing.
