Why 2016 Will Be the Manhattan Skyline’s Biggest Year Ever

The rise of the supertalls has been several years in the making, and One57, 432 Park Avenue, and One World Trade Center have offered a preview of the increasingly gargantuan changes taking place across New York City. But 2016 will mark the start of a new era for the city’s skyline. With six supertalls of 300 meters (984 feet) or greater now rising, the city’s total number of such buildings will nearly double, from seven to thirteen. Yesterday, the New York Post featured YIMBY’s compilation of the towers, and today we wanted to give our own rundown on the image and its implications for our continually-changing city.

10 Hudson Yards won’t end up being the tallest tower at the far West Side development, but it will be the first to open. An event was held to celebrate its topping out back in October, but that was a ceremonial concrete pour. Now, the 895-foot-tall office tower has actually reached its parapet. Downtown Brooklyn Is Finally Getting a New Office Building at 420 Albee Square

The city’s Economic Development Corporation has announced plans to develop Downtown Brooklyn’s first new office building since the neighborhood was rezoned in 2004. The new development at 420 Albee Square will bring 400,000 square feet of commercial space to a site across the street from City Point, between Willoughby and Fulton Streets.

Related Companies and Oxford Properties have signed private equity firm KKR & Co. for their 90-story office tower at 30 Hudson Yards, and they’ve sent out some new renderings of the building to highlight the announcement.

At the end of 2014, YIMBY posted the first renderings for the Collegiate Campus’ expansion at 301 Freedom Place South, between West 61st and 62nd Streets in the new Riverside Center development, which was initially set to be designed by Gluck+. Since then, Kohn Pedersen Fox has replaced Gluck+ as the design architect, and we now have the first rendering of what the building will actually look like.

Out of all the towers currently under construction in Manhattan, the most significantly relative to its surrounding neighborhood is likely 45 East 22nd Street. The Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed building will eventually stand 777 feet tall, but it’s already poking above the local concrete jungle, and its sloped cantilever is also now obvious, per the latest from Tectonic.

Back in June, YIMBY reported that Greenland Forest City Partners’ filed new building applications for a condominium tower at 615 Dean Street. And now we have the first rendering for the 26-story project, which is being designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox.
