New Museum’s Expansion Takes Shape at 231 Bowery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Construction is progressing on the New Museum‘s seven-story expansion at 231 Bowery in the Bowery section of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Designed by Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu of OMA and Cooper Robertson & Partners, the 174-foot-tall annex is rising directly to the south of the SANAA-designed main building, which was originally completed in 2007, and will almost double the institution’s footprint to 115,277 square feet. The 60,000-square-foot addition will connect laterally connect to the current museum and add three gallery floors, an 80-seat restaurant, a larger bookstore, and office space for staff, among other spaces. The property is located at the intersection of Bowery and Spring Street.

537 West 59th Street Tops Out in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan

Construction has topped out on 537 West 59th Street, a nine-story homeless shelter in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. The 98-foot tall structure is designed by Dattner Architects and developed by The Hudson Companies and Project Renewal, a non-profit that offers housing and services for the homeless, the structure will yield 44,845 square feet of community facility space with 200 beds for single women in dorm-style rooms, a 1,500-square-foot medical clinic, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) office space, an 800-square-foot commercial kitchen, a library, and programming space for social services and recreation. The property is located on an interior lot between Amsterdam and West End Avenues.

550 Tenth Avenue Nears Completion in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan

Construction is nearing completion on 550 Tenth Avenue, a 520-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Hell’s Kitchen. Designed by Handel Architects and developed by Gotham Organization and Goldman Sachs Asset Management JV, the 47-story structure will span 430,000 square feet and yield 453 rental units, with 137 reserved for affordable housing, as well as 9,000 square feet of lower-level retail space, over 20,000 square feet of amenities, and 26,764 square feet of administrative office space for Covenant House. GO Covenant LLC is the owner of the property, which is located along Tenth Avenue between West 40th and 41st Streets.

The Bromley Companies announced that 122 Fifth Avenue has been awarded LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The 11-story office building in Union Square, Manhattan yields 300,000 square feet of retail and office space and was recently renovated by STUDIOS Architecture. The property has an L-shaped massing with frontage on both Fifth Avenue and West 17th Street.

50 Ninth Avenue Completes Construction in Chelsea, Manhattan

Construction wraps up on 50 Ninth Avenue, a nine-story commercial renovation and expansion at the intersection of Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, and the West Village. Designed by BKSK Architects for Tavros Capital with Fogarty Finger responsible for all interiors and the storefront, the project involved the restoration of a row of landmarked townhomes and the construction of an office structure set back from the street, and yields 57,000 square feet of office space and 30,000 square feet of flexible retail space. Broadway Construction Group is the general contractor for the project. The property is alternately addressed as 351-355 West 14th Street and located at the corner of Ninth Avenue and West 14th Street.
