Scaffolding Assembly Begins on the Flatiron Building for Exterior Restoration, in Flatiron District

A large amount of black netting and scaffolding is going up on all sides of the limestone and terracotta curtain wall of the Flatiron Building as it embarks on a nearly yearlong renovation. Designed by Daniel Burhnam, the 117-year-old steel-framed landmark is a classic example of the old New York architecture and continues to draw people from around the world to take in its iconic prow at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue.

Cantilevered Floors of COOKFOX’s 39 West 23rd Street Begin To Rise in the Flatiron District

Construction is rapidly ascending at 39 West 23rd Street, a 24-story, ground-up residential structure in the Flatiron District. Designed by COOKFOX Architects and developed by Anbau Enterprises, the project consists of two towers, one along West 23rd Street and a second superstructure at the back of the property. A central landscaped courtyard will sit between each reinforced concrete building.

Rooftop Addition for 150 Fifth Avenue Tops Out Over the Flatiron District

The final steel beam was ceremoniously lifted into place for the addition on 150 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District, in an event attended by leaders of L&L Holding Company and OC Development Management (OCDM). More than 100 construction workers, designers, and engineers were also present for the dedication and signed their names on the beam. The expansion features a two-story, 35,000 square-foot rooftop structure, part of a multi-million-dollar renovation and modernization of the landmarked 11-story building. The entire property will become the new home for Mastercard. STUDIOS Architecture is the design firm behind the project.

JLL Announces $36.7M In Construction Financing for 128-130 West 23rd Street, in Chelsea, Manhattan

JLL Capital Markets recently announced the successful acquisition of a $36.7 million loan to facilitate the construction of a new, mixed-use condominium building in Manhattan. Located on the border of Flatiron and Chelsea, the building’s official address is 128-130 West 23rd Street, and the project is already under construction.

The Bromley Companies Plan Office Addition Atop 122 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan’s Flatiron

The Bromley Companies have tapped Perkins Eastman Architects for a three-story, vertical addition to an existing 19th century building in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood. Located at 122 Fifth Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets, the structure was originally completed in 1899 by architect Robert Maynicke and real estate developer Henry Corn.

Discovery, Inc. Relocates US Operations to 230 Park Avenue South

Global media brand Discovery, Inc. will relocate its US headquarters to New York City’s 230 Park Avenue South. TF Cornerstone facilitated the deal and owns the building, with the headquarters taking over 360,000 square feet of Class A office space.

“Whiteout” Public Art Installation Comes to Madison Square Park, Flatiron District

A new public art installation has come to Madison Square Park’s Oval Lawn, in the Flatiron District. The piece is named Whiteout, and it consists of nine hundred white LED orbs suspended by cable in the shape of two parallel rectangular grids. The lights hang about a foot above the ground, allowing the wind to create noticeable oscillating patterns. Erwin Redl, an Austrian artist, is responsible for the creation of the piece.

Landmarks Approves New Single-Family Residence At 34 West 21st Street, Flatiron

A vacant lot in the Flatiron District is on its way to getting a new building. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved an application for a single-family residence at 34 West 21st Street.

Glass Façade Wraps Around 59-Story, 83-Unit Residential Tower at 45 East 22nd Street, Flatiron District

Since topping out at 777 feet above street level in May, much of 45 East 22nd Street‘s façade has been installed, with the exception of where there’s a construction elevator and support structures for the crane. The latest photos are courtesy of construction photographer Tectonic via the YIMBY Forums. The most recent building permits indicate the Flatiron District tower has 59 real floors and measures 372,684 square feet. Its 83 residential units will be condominiums, configured in simplex, duplex, full-floor, and penthouse layouts. The Continuum Company is the developer. Kohn Pedersen Fox is the design architect, while Goldstein, Hill & West Architects is the architect of record. Martin Brudnizki Design Studio is handling the interiors and Oehme van Sweden is the landscape architect. Completion is expected in 2017.

Façade Installation Underway on 18-Story, 288-Unit Mixed-Use Project at 7 West 21st Street, Flatiron District

Last November, YIMBY reported that the 18-story, 288-unit mixed-use project at 7 West 21st Street, in the Flatiron District, topped out. Since then, much of the façade has been installed on both street fronts — the building spans the block between 21st and 22nd streets — as seen in photos taken by Tectonic. The latest building permits indicate the project encompasses 289,809 square feet. Both buildings will be connected up to the ground floor, where 13,076 square feet of retail is planned. The residential units above will be rentals, averaging 904 square feet apiece. Twenty percent (58 units) will rent at below-market rates through the affordable housing lottery. Friedland Properties is the developer. Morris Adjmi Architects is the design architect, with the Stephen B. Jacobs Group serving as the executive architect. Completion is expected in 2017. The new building sits within the Ladies’ Mile Historic District.
