Governor Kathy Hochul Reveals Updated Plans And Renderings For Penn Station Overhaul in Midtown, Manhattan

Yesterday afternoon Governor Kathy Hochul revealed numerous new renderings of what the outdated 53-year-old Penn Station and the surrounding Midtown, Manhattan district could soon become. Despite being slightly downsized by 7 percent from former Governor Cuomo’s ten-building master plan, the new proposal still encompasses an incredible 18.3 million square feet of construction and redevelopment. Vornado Realty Trust is the developer of the master plan, which is expected to take four to five years to complete and cost between $6-7 billion.

Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center Completes Construction in Crown Heights, Brooklyn

BFC Partners, city agencies, and local community groups recently celebrated the grand opening of Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The community center is named in honor of the late Congressman Major Owens and will offer sports and educational classes, camps, and programming for children and community members.

Curtain wall installation is nearing completion on The Willoughby, a 34-story mixed-use building at 196 Willoughby Street on Long Island University‘s Downtown Brooklyn campus. Designed by Perkins Eastman and developed by RXR Realty, the 435-foot-tall structure will yield residential units, academic and office spaces, an adjacent athletic field, and parking for 564 vehicles. The Willoughby is bound by Willoughby Street to the north, Ashland Place to the east, DeKalb Avenue to the south, and Flatbush Avenue Extension to the west. Hunter Roberts Construction Group is the general contractor for the LIU expansion project.

Gansevoort Peninsula Park Steadily Takes Shape Along West Village Waterfront

Construction is progressing on Gansevoort Peninsula Park, a new 5.5-acre public recreational space near the West Village on the Hudson River. Designed by James Corner Field Operations, who was commissioned by the Hudson River Park Trust in January 2019, the park is located next to Pier 53 and directly across from the Whitney Museum of American Art, and will most notably contain Manhattan’s first public beach.

181 Mercer Street’s Glass Exterior Nears Completion in Greenwich Village, Manhattan

Curtain wall installation is getting closer to completion on 181 Mercer Street, NYU‘s new 750,000-square-foot building in Greenwich Village. Designed by Davis Brody Bond and KieranTimberlake, the development consists of three towers rising from a full-block podium between Houston, Mercer, and Bleecker Streets and I.M. Pei’s University Village complex.

Twin Supertalls Revealed as Part of Garden City, Possible Relocation of Madison Square Garden, in Midtown Manhattan

Community Board Five’s Land Use, Housing & Zoning Committee voted in a meeting on Wednesday to advance plans for a massive undertaking in Midtown involving the conversion of Madison Square Garden into a new concourse for Penn Station, and the creation of a new home for the sports facility between two supertall skyscrapers near Herald Square. Initially proposed in 2016 by Vishaan Chakrabarti, founder of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU), new renderings give visual context to the plan, to which the city council agreed with the consideration of The Madison Square Garden Company’s acquisition of a shorter extension of its current lease.
