The developments are all located within close proximity of the N train at the 8th Avenue subway station, and are characteristic of the smaller scale construction transforming the outer boroughs in conjunction with the larger projects typically highlighted in our coverage.
YIMBY checked in on four residential and commercial developments among the wave of new construction in Washington Heights, Manhattan. All located near the 1, A, and C trains at the 168th Street station, the properties are part of the neighborhood transformation around the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, which includes larger projects such as KPF’s 1150 Saint Nicholas Avenue and Studio Gang’s 635 West 165th Street.
Construction is progressing on the eight-story Vagelos Innovation Laboratories at 1150 Saint Nicholas Avenue in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox for Columbia University, the all-electric structure will serve as a new state-of-the-art biomedical research facility and also include symposium and community spaces for the university’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. The project is being built at the corner of West 167th Street and Audubon Avenue.
The city’s first Outposted Therapeutic Housing Unit has opened at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, marking a step in the plan to close Rikers Island. Located at 462 First Avenue in Kips Bay, Manhattan, the 104-bed facility is designed to serve incarcerated individuals with complex medical needs. Clinically vulnerable detainees will be transferred from Rikers into the new facility.
Construction is in full swing on The Beacon, a 16-story medical building at 635 West 165th Street in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Designed by Studio Gang for the NewYork-Presbyterian / Columbia University Irving Medical Center campus, the 297-foot-tall structure will span roughly 400,000 square feet. The steel-based building will include a cellar and basement level and a penthouse floor. The property is located at the northeast corner of West 165th Street and Fort Washington Avenue.
