Reveal For 24-Story, 55-Unit Mixed-Use Building At 50 West 30th Street, NoMad

In December of 2014, YIMBY reported on applications for a 24-story, 55-unit mixed-use building at 846-850 Sixth Avenue, in MoMad, located on the corner of West 30th Street. Curbed NY now has renderings of the project, which is being dubbed The NOMA, with an official address of 50 West 30th Street. The latest filings indicate the new building will encompass 105,973 square feet and will include retail space totaling 10,363 square feet on the cellar through the second floors. The residential units, beginning on the third floor, will be condominium and should average 1,320 square feet apiece. The apartments will range from one- to three-bedroom configurations. FXFOWLE Architects is behind the design and Alchemy Properties is the developer. It replaces the site’s former single-story commercial property, which was demolished last year.

14-Story, 52-Key Hotel Planned At 1162 Broadway Moves Forward, NoMad

In December of 2013, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the planned 14-story, 52-key hotel at 1162 Broadway, between West 27th and 28th streets in NoMad, located within the Madison Square North Historic District. Applications for the project were submitted in May of 2014, but filings were incomplete until yesterday, when Aini Assests filed drawings with the Department of Buildings. The building will have 24,325 square feet of commercial space and there will be a café or restaurant on the ground floor. Morris Adjmi Architects is behind the design. The site is currently occupied by a 26-foot-wide, two-story commercial structure, and demolition permits were filed this past December. The LPC also recently approved plans for a hotel next door at 1164 Broadway.

40-Story, 164-Key Viñoly-Designed Extended-Stay Hotel Planned at 1185 Broadway, NoMad

Permits were filed Thursday for a 40-story-tall, 164-key hotel at 1185 Broadway, at the northwest corner of West 28^th Street, in NoMad/Midtown South. The site’s single-story commercial building, with six businesses, was demolished in 2015, and this will be a big change for the property.

In 2015, New York’s landmarks law turned 50 years old. Events and discussion panels were held across the city throughout the year. The Museum of the City of New York held the commemorative Saving Place exhibit. As YIMBY reported, six individual landmarks and four historic districts were designated during this period. However, last year also saw its fair share of demolitions. Here, we look back at a small selection from the dozens of buildings that met the wrecking ball over the course of 2015. These eight structures range from architectural masterpieces to eyesores and span across a variety of decades, styles, and uses – as diverse as the Big Apple’s built environment itself.

Commercial Building At 1145 Broadway To Receive Restoration, Expansion

A five-story commercial building not far from Madison Square Park will receive a much-needed restoration and full rear expansion. The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the proposal for 1145 Broadway on Tuesday.

32-Story Hyatt House At 101 West 28th Street Is Topped Out And Nearing Exterior Completion

101 West 28th Street, a Hyatt House hotel with 150 guestrooms and apartment-style suites, is topped-out and nearing exterior completion. The slender tower, designed by Nobutaka Ashihara and developed by Lexin Capital, rises at the northwest corner of 6th Avenue and West 28th Street to around 300 feet in height, with 30 main tower floors plus three more levels at the top.

Plan to Remake West 29th Street Halted by Time, Lack of Quorum

There is a plan in the works that would drastically change West 29^th Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue. It involves six buildings in total, including two individual landmarks, and includes one 64-story mixed-use tower. The plan, being developed by HFZ Capital and the Collegiate Churches of New York, was presented to the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday. Members of the public testified, but by the time that happened, it was about 6 p.m. and, not having a quorum, no action was taken and the matter was tabled.

Landmarks Okays Extension for NoMad Hotel at 1164 Broadway

The NoMad Hotel at Broadway and West 28th Street is one step closer to getting a bit bigger. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved an addition for the trendy hotel. That addition at 1164 Broadway will match the 147-foot height of the existing building at 1170 Broadway and is about the height of a planned hotel at 1162 Broadway.

New Renderings Of 24-Story, 48-Unit Condo Conversion At 212 Fifth Avenue, NoMad

Early last month, the residential conversion of the 24-story commercial building at 212 Fifth Avenue, in NoMad, was underway, and now Curbed has uncovered new exterior and interior renderings of the project. Forty-eight condominiums are being carved out of the existing structure, and the units will be large, with some measuring 1,500 square feet, and larger configurations measuring north of 4,000 square feet. Madison Equities and Thor Equities are developing, while Helpern Architects is designing. Sales have already launched, and completion is expected next spring.

Since New York’s earliest days, church organizations have held a considerable amount of the city’s real estate, which they use not only for direct religious services, but also as a means of generating income. Over the past year, we witnessed the destruction of one of the oldest properties of the kind, as the 119 year old Bancroft Building has been reduced to a pile of red brick rubble.
