Mourning the Landmark Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava, 15 West 25th Street, Gutted by Four-Alarm Blaze on Easter Day

The May 1 celebration of Eastern Orthodox Easter was marred by the tragic fire at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava at 15 West 25th Street, which reduced the landmark building to a charred stone shell. Aside from minor smoke inhalation by the church caretaker, no one was injured in the four-alarm blaze. The same cannot be said for the church building itself, which was reduced to a charred ruin.

New Details, Rendering of 55-Story, 130-Unit Condo Tower Planned at 281 Fifth Avenue, NoMad

Back in June of 2015, YIMBY revealed initial renderings of the 52-story, 141-unit residential tower planned at 281 Fifth Avenue, located at the corner of East 30th Street in NoMad. Although the latest filings still describe the same building, Curbed NY now has a new partial rendering depicting the façade of a 55-story, 130-unit tower on the corner site. The latest diagrams indicate the the 266,963-square-foot tower will rise 728 feet above street level. It will contain 7,927 square feet of retail space across the cellar, ground, and second floors, followed by residential amenities on the third through seventh floors. The residential units above will be condominiums, averaging 1,611 square feet apiece.


50 West 30th Street

Reveal For 24-Story, 55-Unit Mixed-Use Building At 50 West 30th Street, NoMad

In December of 2014, YIMBY reported on applications for a 24-story, 55-unit mixed-use building at 846-850 Sixth Avenue, in MoMad, located on the corner of West 30th Street. Curbed NY now has renderings of the project, which is being dubbed The NOMA, with an official address of 50 West 30th Street. The latest filings indicate the new building will encompass 105,973 square feet and will include retail space totaling 10,363 square feet on the cellar through the second floors. The residential units, beginning on the third floor, will be condominium and should average 1,320 square feet apiece. The apartments will range from one- to three-bedroom configurations. FXFOWLE Architects is behind the design and Alchemy Properties is the developer. It replaces the site’s former single-story commercial property, which was demolished last year.


1162 Broadway

14-Story, 52-Key Hotel Planned At 1162 Broadway Moves Forward, NoMad

In December of 2013, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the planned 14-story, 52-key hotel at 1162 Broadway, between West 27th and 28th streets in NoMad, located within the Madison Square North Historic District. Applications for the project were submitted in May of 2014, but filings were incomplete until yesterday, when Aini Assests filed drawings with the Department of Buildings. The building will have 24,325 square feet of commercial space and there will be a café or restaurant on the ground floor. Morris Adjmi Architects is behind the design. The site is currently occupied by a 26-foot-wide, two-story commercial structure, and demolition permits were filed this past December. The LPC also recently approved plans for a hotel next door at 1164 Broadway.
