Excavation work appears imminent at the site of the 51-story, 180-unit mixed-use tower under development at 15 East 30th Street, located on the corner of Madison Avenue in NoMad. Progress, which also includes apparent work on below-grade retaining walls, can be seen thanks to photos posted to the YIMBY Forums. The latest building permits indicate the tower will encompass 361,785 square feet and rise 756 feet in height.

The 24-Story NOMA Tower Grows at 50 West 30th Street

Alchemy Properties is developing a 316-foot-tall condominium tower at the corner of 30th Street and Sixth Avenue in NoMad, and Tectonic swung by the site recently to document the latest progress. The development, known as NOMA, has reached three stories above street level at 50 West 30th Street.

Foundation Work Underway On 52-Story, 141-Unit Mixed-Use Tower at 281 Fifth Avenue, NoMad

Foundation work is now underway on the 52-story, 141-unit mixed-use tower under development at 281 Fifth Avenue, located on the corner of West 30th Street in NoMad. The construction progress can be seen thanks to photos posted to the YIMBY Forums. The latest building permits indicate the project will stand 728 feet in height and encompass 266,963 square feet.

Foundation Work Underway on 21-Story Hotel at 16 East 30th Street, NoMad

Foundation work is now underway on the 21-story hotel under development at 16 East 30th Street, in NoMad. The construction progress can be seen thanks to a photo posted to the YIMBY Forums. The latest building permits indicate that the new structure will encompass 50,997 square feet and rise 204 feet to its roof, not including the bulkhead.

Construction Reaches Street Level for 24-Story, 55-Unit Mixed-Use Tower at 50 West 30th Street, NoMad

Construction is now up to street level on the western end of 50 West 30th Street (a.k.a. 846 Sixth Avenue), in NoMad, where a 24-story, 55-unit mixed-use tower is under development. The construction progress can be seen thanks to photos posted to the YIMBY Forums. The latest building permits indicate the project, dubbed the NOMA, will eventually encompass 105,973 square feet and rise 315 feet to its pinnacle. It will include 10,363 square feet of retail space across the cellar through second floors, followed by residential units on the third through 24th floors. The apartments, condominiums, will range from one- to three-bedrooms, averaging 1,320 square feet apiece. Alchemy Properties is the developer and FXFOWLE Architects is behind the architecture. Completion is expected in January of 2018.

A NoMad hotel will be getting a facelift. The Landmarks Preservation Commission recently approved work to be done at the Broadway Plaza Hotel, located at 1155 Broadway, in the Madison Square North Historic District.

It’s been over a year since YIMBY revealed 15 East 30th Street, the 750-foot condo tower under construction between Fifth and Madison avenues in NoMad. Now, we have a fresh rendering of the building, which was posted on the construction fence yesterday.

Office-Retail Renovation Underway at 12-Story, 61,000-Square-Foot Building, 3 East 28th Street, NoMad

The vacant, 12-story former manufacturing building at 3 East 28th Street, in NoMad, is now receiving a $20 million gut-renovation. The 61,325-square-foot structure is being upgraded and modernized to accommodate office and retail tenants, Commercial Observer first reported, and YIMBY has renderings of the project.

City Orders Demolition of Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava’s Burnt Remains

As May came to an end, the New York City Fire Department was investigating the fire that gutted the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava, an individual landmark at 15 West 25th Street in the Flatiron District. Authorities and engineers were studying the structural integrity of the remains, and have now declared the church “too unstable to be left standing,” the New York Post reported. That means the main house of worship will be demolished. The rectory portion of the cathedral, which was unscathed during the fire, currently also has Landmarks protection, which should mean it won’t be demolished with the main structure. The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) has the option to de-designate the property, too, but we think, at the very least, the LPC will want to keep the rectory a landmark. The Executive Board of St. Sava will now decide if they will rebuild on the property or relocate. The site has 244,450 square feet of mixed-use development rights, minus the usable square-footage of the rectory.

FDNY Investigation Underway at Burnt Shell of Landmark Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava, 15 West 25th Street, Flatiron

As this month got underway, we brought you the unfortunate news regarding the landmark Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava at 15 West 25th Street, designed by Richard Upjohn, the architect of the Trinity Church in Lower Manhattan. The 1855 building, which was the city’s only house of prayer servicing the Serbian Orthodox community, was reduced to a charred stone shell on the evening of May 1, just hours after the Orthodox Easter celebration. While the church is collecting donations for reconstruction, the authorities are investigating the fenced-off site for the cause of the conflagration, while engineers keep an eye on the ruined building’s stability. The building is a New York City landmark and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Although the city’s laws protect the building from further demolition, the stone shell may be torn down if ultimately deemed dangerously unstable. Fortunately, the walls appear to be structurally sound for the time being, though serious reinforcement work would be permitted only after the investigations are complete.
