45 Park Place Stands Unfinished in Tribeca, Manhattan

Second on YIMBY’s Turkey Week tour of stalled projects is 45 Park Place, a 43-story residential skyscraper in Tribeca. Designed by SOMA Architects with Ismael Leyva Architects as the executive and residential architect and developed by Sharif el-Gamal of Soho Properties, the 667-foot-tall tower has been stalled since sometime in late 2019. Piero Lissoni is the interior designer, Permasteelisa Group and Vidaris are the façade consultants, and Gilbane Residential Construction is the general contractor for the property, which is located between Church Street and West Broadway.

Mosaic Installation Unveiled at Esplanade Plaza in Battery Park City, Manhattan

Battery Park City Authority, the Art for Justice Fund, and the Ford Foundation have unveiled a trio of public mosaics at Esplanade Plaza in Lower Manhattan. Entitled Justice Reflected, the mosaics are located on a 90-foot granite wall at the southern end of Battery Park’s North Cove Marina and were created by artist James Yaya Hough.

Permits Filed for 261 Walton Avenue in Mott Haven, The Bronx

Permits have been filed for a 13-story mixed-use building with affordable housing at 261 Walton Avenue in Mott Haven, The Bronx. Located between East 138th Street and East 140th Street, the lot is near the 138 Street-Grand Concourse subway station, serviced by the 4 and 5 trains. Joshua Weissman of JCAL Development is listed as the owner behind the applications.

Renovated David Geffen Hall Opens at Lincoln Center, Manhattan

After years of meticulous planning and construction, the renovated David Geffen Hall is now open at Lincoln Center and will serve as the permanent home for the New York Philharmonic and its schedule of programming for the 2022-2023 season.

Urban League Empowerment Center’s Façade Nears Completion at 121 West 125th Street in Harlem, Manhattan

Exterior work is nearing completion on the Urban League Empowerment Center, a 17-story mixed-use building at 121 West 125th Street in Harlem, Manhattan. Designed by Beyer Blinder Belle and developed by The Prusik Group, BRP Companies, L+M Development Partners, and Taconic Partners, the 414-000-square-foot structure will yield 170 residential units with an affordable housing component, 70,000 square feet of Class A office space, and 110,000 square feet of retail area including a Target and a 28,000-square-foot Trader Joe’s on the ground floor. Other tenants include National Urban League and the Urban Civil Rights Experience Museum. Congress Builders is the general contractor for the property, which is located between West 126th Street to the north, 125th Street to the south, Malcolm X Boulevard to the east, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard to the west.

New York state Senator Michael Gianaris has revealed plans to construct a new planetarium at 21-12 30th Road in Astoria, Queens. Construction of the planetarium is a major facet of plans to renovate the site’s existing building which currently houses the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens, a non-profit organization that offers youth development, physical fitness, and seasonal programming for local children and teens.

Demolition Underway for New Museum Expansion at 231 Bowery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Demolition work is underway for the New Museum‘s eight-story expansion at 235 Bowery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Designed by Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu of OMA and Cooper Robertson & Partners, the 174-foot-tall annex will rise directly to the south of the SANAA-designed main building from 2007 and nearly double the institution’s footprint to 115,277 square feet. The sleek, angular volume will connect laterally to the original museum and house three gallery floors, a cafe, a bookstore, offices, community and educational program space, art storage, and outdoor terraces. Sciame Construction is the general contractor for the property, which is located at the intersection of Bowery and Spring Street.

Silverstein Properties has repurposed vacant commercial space on the ground floor of 529 Fifth Avenue in Midtown into an interactive public art space. Dubbed “Wonderland Dreams,” the exhibit invites patrons to explore an immersive 3D painting created in partnership with artist Alexa Meade and Catching Flights.

Sendero Verde’s 34-Story Second Phase Progresses at 50 East 112th Street in East Harlem, Manhattan

Construction has passed the halfway point on 50 East 112th Street, the tallest tower in the Sendero Verde mixed-use complex in East Harlem, Manhattan. Designed by Handel Architects and developed by Jonathan Rose Companies, L+M Development Partners, and Acacia Network, the 34-story tower represents the second phase of construction and will yield 361 permanently affordable rental units for low- to moderate-income families and the formerly homeless. The edifice is rising directly to the west of the completed first phase, which encompasses a 15-story tower at 60 East 112th Street and a ten-story structure at 75 East 111th Street. The latest tower will span 395,000 square feet, making it the largest affordable Passive House development in the world. L&M Builders Group is the general contractor for the property, which is located at the corner of East 112th Street and Madison Avenue.

Hall Des Lumières Opens at the Historic Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank in Civic Center, Manhattan

Culturespaces and IMG have transformed the base of the historic Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank into Hall des Lumières, a multi-level immersive art exhibition and cultural venue at 49 Chambers Street in the Civic Center section of Lower Manhattan. Now open to the public, the 33,000-square-foot space represents a multinational collaboration among 3D projection artists, local design studios, historic preservation teams, and sound designers.
