It was in November that the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved altering a 1942 garage building at 456 Greenwich Street (at the corner of Desbrosses Street) and turn it into a restaurant. Well, things have changed and the proposal is now to demolish the existing building and build a hotel that will stretch out of the Tribeca North Historic District.
Restoration Hardware is planning to convert the five-story, 25,000 square-foot building at 55 Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, into a 14-key boutique hotel. According to Crain’s, the ground floor of the building will feature a restaurant. Delshah Capital owns the five-story building, but Restoration Hardware — whose flagship store is located around the corner of 9th Avenue — has leased the entire property.
Last month, YIMBY brought you the first renderings for the future Hoxton Hotel, coming to 97 Wythe Avenue, just a few blocks in from the Williamsburg waterfront. Now, we have an update on another nearby hotel project, and significant progress is being made on 55 Wythe Avenue, aka the William Vale Hotel.
Just like Brooklyn’s other trendy industrial zones in Bushwick and Williamsburg, the M-1 zone around the Gowanus Canal has become a breeding ground for boutique hotels. The developer of the nearby Union Hotel filed plans last year for a second hotel at 489 Baltic Street, on the border between Gowanus and Boerum Hill. Now YIMBY has renderings for the four-story project between Bond and Nevins Streets.
Concrete and rebar has risen at the 17th floor of Commune Hotel & Resort’s planned 20-story, 229-key Joie de Vivre hotel at 50 Bowery, in Chinatown. Bowery Boogie has the latest update, and glass installation is well underway; the structure was only 10 stories in height this past June. Peter Poon is designing the building, and completion is expected in the spring of 2016.
