Now that a judge has finalized the sale of Cobble Hill’s Long Island College Hospital to Fortis Property Group, the developer has wasted no time in filing plans for a new emergency center. New building applications surfaced on Friday for a new five-story medical building at 70 Atlantic Avenue, on the corner of Hicks Street.
Last night, a collection of Bushwick community activists, union members and neighbors sweated it out on folding chairs at a church on George Street to figure out how they would hold Rabsky Group—the developer of part of the Rheingold Brewery site—to the previous owner’s agreement to provide affordable units and funding for neighborhood schools and parks.
Most of Williamsburg’s larger buildings have grown on the Northside, where waterfront parcels were deliberately upzoned. But every once in a while, a developer manages to snag a fairly large parcel like 329 Broadway, on the corner of Rodney Street beneath the elevated J/M/Z tracks.
Just like Brooklyn’s other trendy industrial zones in Bushwick and Williamsburg, the M-1 zone around the Gowanus Canal has become a breeding ground for boutique hotels. The developer of the nearby Union Hotel filed plans last year for a second hotel at 489 Baltic Street, on the border between Gowanus and Boerum Hill. Now YIMBY has renderings for the four-story project between Bond and Nevins Streets.
Nelson Management paid $51.5 million for the four-building, rent-stabilized complex known as Lafayette Boynton in the Soundview section of the South Bronx in 2011, and they just spent another $17 million renovating its 972 apartments. Now the Forest Hills-based firm plans to build two more 13-story towers in the sprawling development next to Soundview Park.
