Staten Island Developers File Plans for Houses on Streets Named for Greed at Mount Manresa

In February, Politico New York reported that a judge would allow Staten Island Borough President James Oddo to choose street names that signified greed and deception for a new development on the site of the former Mount Manresa Jesuit Retreat, next to the approach for the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Now, the builders have filed plans for their sprawling townhouse project on Cupidity Drive, Avidita Place, and Fouberie Lane.

City Council Votes Down Rezoning for 15-Story Inwood Apartment Building at 4650 Broadway

After two weeks of haphazard fits and starts and a confrontational protest with tenant activists, City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez and the City Council Land Use Committee unanimously disapproved a plan to rezone the corner of Broadway and Sherman avenues, which would have paved the way for the construction of a 15-story apartment building known as Sherman Plaza.

A seven-story hotel on West 42nd Street between 10th and 11th avenues may bite the dust for a 39-story apartment building. The latest West Side megatower is planned for 507 West 42nd Street, a couple blocks north of the Lincoln Tunnel approach.

Two years ago, developer Seth Brown of Aspen Equities demolished the “berserk-eclectic” Victorian mansion at 111 Clarkson Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Now, two rental buildings are rising in its place, on a through-block lot between Bedford and Rogers avenues.

Recently, green construction walls went up around an iconic detached house at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Lenox Road in Flatbush. Although it’s not the most beautiful house in the neighborhood, the two-and-a-half story home is one of several that lends an air of dignity to this stretch of Bedford in Prospect Lefferts Gardens and northern Flatbush. Now, like many standalone houses in the neighborhood, it will bite the dust for an apartment building. Plans were filed last week to erect a seven-story apartment building there at 100 Lenox Road, a few blocks southeast of Prospect Park.

Bed-Stuy is experiencing a real estate boom, but renewal has been slow to arrive on the eastern edges of the neighborhood, where aging row houses sit next to squat warehouses and vacant lots.
