Pedestrian-Friendly Fordham Plaza Opens To Public In West Bronx

The $34 million renovation and redesign of Fordham Plaza – bound by East 189th Street and East Fordham Road, and Park Avenue and Firefighters Boulevard in the West Bronx – has recently been completed, according to the Architect’s Newspaper. The plaza was designed by Grimshaw Architects and features a café, market canopies, public toilets, vegetation, and seating. It also serves 12 bus lines and is directly above the Fordham station on the Metro-North Railroad. The initiative behind the project was to reduce traffic accidents and to create a more pedestrian-friendly experience. The city’s Department of Design and Construction and Department of Transportation were behind the project.

Bronx-based Marricco Family Limited Partnership has filed applications for a three-story, six-unit residential building at 1857 Barnes Avenue, in Van Nest, located seven blocks from the Bronx Park East stop on the 2 and 5 trains. The structure will encompass 8,270 square feet, although its residential space will measure 6,226 square feet. That means units will average 1,038 square feet apiece, which is relatively spacious and indicative of market-rate apartments. College Point-based Gino Longo is the architect of record. The site consists of a 55-foot-wide parcel, and demolition permits were filed in December to remove an existing two-story townhouse.

Request For Proposals Released For Mixed-Use Development Site At 2870 Webster Avenue, Bedford Park

The New York Botanical Garden has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a mixed-use development assemblage at 2856-2870 Webster Avenue and 412 Bedford Park Boulevard, in Bedford Park. According to Curbed NY, the site could accommodate roughly 300 residential units, in addition to a 125-plus-key hotel and at least 12,000 square feet of retail. The site is located right above the Metro-North Railroad’s Botanical Garden station and currently consists of multiple low-rise commercial buildings. Proposal submissions are due on March 1, and the Garden is hoping to choose a developer before April.

Property owner Kole Popaj has filed applications for two three-story, four-unit residential buildings at 513-515 Van Nest Avenue, in the Van Nest section of the Bronx, located three blocks from the East 180th Street stop on the 2 and 5 trains. The buildings will measure 4,270 and 4,005 square feet, respectively, and the residential space in both structures will total 6,207 square feet. That means units across the development will average 776 square feet, which is indicative of rentals. Pelham, N.Y.-based Fred Geremia Architects & Planners is the applicant of record. The existing two-story house was filed for demolition last summer.

Flushing-based D&K Realty Development has filed applications for three three-story, three-family residential buildings at 518-522 West 232nd Street, on the southern end of Riverdale in the North Bronx. The square-footage of each building differs slightly, although the entire development will have 8,670 square feet of residential space. Across the buildings, units will average 963 square feet apiece, so either small condos or spacious rental apartments could be in the works. Flushing-based Michael Kang is the architect of record. The site is currently vacant, as its three-story predecessor was demolished back in 2007.
