The saga behind the rise of 53 West 53rd Street is finally drawing to a close, and after excavation began approximately one year ago, foundation work is finally beginning for the future supertall. When we last checked on the project, digging had made some progress, but the latest photo set from ILNY shows the base of a crane has now been installed, rebar is arriving, and that excavation work has seemingly wrapped up.
Long Island City’s architecture is slowly following the trend set in Williamsburg: big, glassy high rises and shorter residential buildings designed to mimic their early 20th century industrial neighbors. The latest of these factory-style projects is a 10-story apartment building underway at 42-60 Crescent Street.

Gateway Estates, a multi-phased development consisting of affordable residential units and commercial space in southern East New York, is now preparing for its final phase of construction. The city is behind schedule in building the proper infrastructure, and work won’t be finished until late 2017, per the New York Daily News, but 1,295 apartments and 225 homes are planned on the vacant land. Financing is expected to close by the end of this year. Nehemiah, the Department of Design and Construction, Metro Industrial Areas Foundation and Monadnock Construction are developing.
A four-story nursing home at 123 Linden Boulevard in Flatbush hit the market in early 2014 asking $20 million. Now the new owner has filed plans for a 57-unit apartment building on the site between Bedford and Rogers Avenues.
