With the soon-to-be 777-foot-tall 45 East 22nd Street now climbing quickly into the Flatiron District’s skyline, YIMBY sat down with developer Bruce Eichner to discuss the building’s progress, the surrounding neighborhood’s rapid evolution, as well as what else might be on the horizon for Continuum. Back in October of 2012, YIMBY broke news of plans for a significant hotel and retail tower at 701 Seventh Avenue, in Times Square, and now that excavation is nearly complete, foundation work is imminent on the 39-story, 452-key Marriott Edition, according to the New York Post. Dubbed 20 Times Square, the building will measure just under 270,000 square feet and will include 76,000 square feet of retail space. The retail base will also feature an 18,000 square-foot LED sign. Steven Witkoff, Ian Schrager, Winthrop Realty Trust, and Maefield Development are the developers, while PBDW Architects is designing. Completion is expected in 2017.
Related Companies and Oxford Properties have signed private equity firm KKR & Co. for their 90-story office tower at 30 Hudson Yards, and they’ve sent out some new renderings of the building to highlight the announcement.
There is a plan in the works that would drastically change West 29th Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue. It involves six buildings in total, including two individual landmarks, and includes one 64-story mixed-use tower. The plan, being developed by HFZ Capital and the Collegiate Churches of New York, was presented to the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday. Members of the public testified, but by the time that happened, it was about 6 p.m. and, not having a quorum, no action was taken and the matter was tabled.
The NoMad Hotel at Broadway and West 28th Street is one step closer to getting a bit bigger. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved an addition for the trendy hotel. That addition at 1164 Broadway will match the 147-foot height of the existing building at 1170 Broadway and is about the height of a planned hotel at 1162 Broadway.
