Four-Story, 32,000-Square-Foot Retail Building Filed At 12 West 48th Street, Midtown

DNA Development has filed applications for a four-story, 32,349-square-foot commercial-retail building at 12 West 48th Street, in Midtown. The ground through fourth floors will exclusively contain retail space. The structure will rise 66 feet above street level, which means the ceilings should average 16.5 feet in height. West Village-based Ennead Architects is the architect of record. The amount of commercial space planned clocks in at 23,345 square feet, which is significantly less than the maximum commercial square-footage that could be built, 75,310 square feet. The 7,531-square-foot lot is currently occupied by a parking garage. Permits were filed to demolish it over the summer, as YIMBY previously reported. Completion is expected in early 2018.

Ground Floor of 46-Story Hearst Tower Getting 107-Foot-Long Digital Display, 300 West 57th Street

Hearst Tower, the 46-story, 861,100-square-foot office tower located at 300 West 57th Street in Midtown, is about to get a flashy upgrade to its ground floor. Crews are now constructing what will be dubbed HearstLive, a digital, wrap-around media installation that will broadcast news and other information. It will become the building’s façade at street level, measuring 107 feet, five inches along Eighth Avenue and 57th Street. The exact content will be determined by a collection of Hearst’s brands and partners. Hearst Tower is an individual landmark, which means the Landmarks Preservation Commission would have had to approve any exterior alterations, but this latest addition appears to be located behind the existing glass. HearstLive will debut on September 27.

LED Crown Atop 73-Story One57 Illuminated for First Time

YIMBY’s last update on One57 — the 73-story mixed-use tower, with 92 condominiums perched above a 210-key Park Hyatt Hotel, at 157 West 57th Street, in Midtown — was back in August of 2014. At the time, the removal of sidewalk shedding was underway, which signaled that construction had been completed. One last element, however, wasn’t revealed until earlier this week: the structure’s LED crown that faces Central Park. The western half was turned on, as seen in a photo posted to the YIMBY Forums. Renderings have long suggested an illuminated crown on the 1,005-foot-tall tower, which was designed by Paris-based Atelier Christian de Portzamparc. Extell Development Company developed One57. Per a count done in the spring, 38 condos remained unsold.

20-Story, 290-Key AC Hotel Rises Above Street Level at 252 West 40th Street, Garment District

Construction has reached the third floor on the 20-story, 290-key four-star AC Hotel under development at 252 West 40th Street, in the Garment District section of Midtown. The construction progress can be seen thanks to photos posted to the YIMBY Forums. The latest building permits describe a structure that will eventually measure 120,489 square feet and rise 230 feet above street level. The hotel rooms will be located on the second through 18th floors and should average 415 square feet apiece. Amenities include a fitness center, a library, storage for 12 bikes, a restaurant on the ground floor, and a second restaurant on the 20th floor. OTO Development is the developer and Helpern Architects is behind the architecture. Completion can probably be expected in 2017.
