One of the most significant houses of worship in New York City history is about to receive a $98.6 million renovation that will partially close the church for nearly two years. Trinity Church has long been a landmark to the Financial District, which is why the Church Leadership considers the project vital.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission has refused a proposed addition to 827-831 Broadway for the second time, obliging its designers DXA Studio to reimagine their approach once more. The plan would add offices, retail, and community space inside and above two Italianate structures built between 1866 and 1867. The source of the controversy is the addition of four floors on top of the historic buildings. Samson Klugman of Quality Capital and Leo Tsimmer of Caerus Group purchased the pair in 2015 for $60 million. They initially filed permits for a 300-foot-tall commercial tower, but that was stopped when the LPC granted the extant structures landmark status.
A newly minted tower has risen above the New York harbor. The Helmut Jahn-designed 50 West is a 783-foot tall residential building in Manhattan’s Financial District with curtain wall glass and distinctive angled crown. The project has been about a decade since it started, and now proudly stands with early move-ins, nearly complete. It started in 2008, right before the Great Depression. The glass façade was finished in February, and interior installation has started. Time Equities is responsible for the development.
New building applications have revealed that a rumored high-end office development is moving forward at 799 Broadway, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. Global architecture firm Perkins+Will will be in charge of its design.
