New York State Awards $20M to Finance 11 Community Improvement Projects in Chinatown, Manhattan

Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood is the latest recipient of a $20 million award from New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative, an economic development program led by the Department of State, Empire State Development, the New York State Homes and Community Renewal, and NYSERDA. The award will support 11 projects across the neighborhood that will improve streetscape connectivity and support the creation of new public gathering spaces, community facilities, and public artworks.

Construction Breaks Ground at 14 White Street in Tribeca, Manhattan

Excavation has begun at 14 White Street, the site of a seven-story residential building in the Tribeca East Historic District. Designed in collaboration between NAVA and DXA Studios and developed by 14 White Street Property Owner LLC, the 30,000-square-foot structure will yield ten condominium units ranging from 1,200-square-foot two-bedroom homes to four-bedroom layouts spanning 4,000 square feet. Central is the general contractor for the property, which is bound by White Street to the south and Sixth Avenue to the east.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Opens to the Public in Manhattan’s Financial District

YIMBY recently visited the completed St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which opened its doors on December 5, 2022. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and developed by The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the reinforced concrete structure stands 25 feet above street level atop Liberty Park, across from the site of the original 16-acre World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District. Interior paintings were all done by hand by iconographer Father Loukas of Xenophontos.

355 Grand Street Nears Completion on Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Construction is nearing completion on 355 Grand Street, a six-story residential building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Designed by S M Tam Architect and developed by Interboro Realty Management, which purchased the property for $4 million in 2015, the structure will yield an undisclosed number of units and 2,282 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Grand Building Contracting Inc. is the general contractor for the project, which is located on the southwest corner of Grand and Essex Streets.
