New York City Mayor Eric Adams and the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission have announced the designation of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Park in Oakwood Heights, Staten Island, as an individual landmark. Opened in 1935, the park is the only existing non-sectarian cemetery founded by and for New York City’s Black community.
Permits have been filed for a 10-story residential building at 218 Madison Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan. Located at the intersection of East 36th Street and Madison Avenue, the corner lot is in walking distance of Grand Central-42nd Street subway station, serviced by the S, 4, 5, 6, and 7 trains. Rybak Development is listed as the owner behind the applications.
Construction is wrapping up on Chelsea Canvas, a 14-story mixed-use building at 280 West 24th Street in Chelsea, Manhattan. Designed by FXCollaborative and developed by Alchemy-ABR Investment Partners and Chelsea 23rd Realty Corporation, an LLC affiliated with JJ Operating, the 175-foot-tall structure spans 132,700 square feet and will yield 190 rental apartments in studio to three-bedroom layouts, as well as 33,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and cellar levels. Square Mile Capital and Pacific Western Bank provided $183 million in construction financing for the project, which was formerly addressed as 278 Eighth Avenue and is located along Eighth Avenue between West 23rd and West 24th Streets.
Work is progressing on the public plaza and ground-floor retail space at One High Line, a two-tower residential development at 500 West 18th Street in Chelsea, Manhattan. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group and developed by Witkoff Group and Access Industries, the twisting 36- and 26-story structures will span combined 900,000 square feet and yield 236 condominium units in one- to five-bedroom layouts, as well as a hotel component operated by Faena Hotel and ground-floor retail space. The property is alternately addressed as 76 Eleventh Avenue and stands adjacent to the High Line on a trapezoidal plot bound by West 18th Street to the north, West 17th Street to the south, Tenth Avenue to the east, and West Street to the west.
Eight West, a newly launched affiliate company of The Hakimian Organization, recently announced the completion of SOLA, a new mixed-use project located at 72-01 Queens Boulevard in Woodside, Queens. The project was designed by Aufgang Architects and officially opened in June.
