Thomas Heatherwick’s “Vessel” Lights Up as Testing Begins, Hudson Yards

With a grand and unprecedented presence in the Midtown skyline, Hudson Yards continues to stop tourists and locals alike, as steel and concrete continue rising into the sky. Several days ago, just after dusk, one aspect of the complex caught a few people’s attention by surprise. The Vessel, created by British designer Thomas Heatherwick, seems to have been illuminated for the first time since the 150-foot public sculpture topped-out last year.

Excavation Underway at 159 West 48th Street, Future Home of Hard Rock Hotel, Times Square

On a plot of land along 48th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, excavation has begun for a 445-key Hard Rock Hotel, designed by Berg+ Moss Architects. The hotel’s Times Square outpost will be developed by Extell in a partnership with Hard Rock International, with an address at 159 West 48th Street. Extell purchased the site back in 2011 for $26 million, along with air rights that bring the project up to a potential scope of 225,000 square feet.

Foundation Work Takes Shape at 77 Greenwich, Financial District

Since we last checked up on the Financial District site of 77 Greenwich (aka 42 Trinity Place) last October, excavation has completely wrapped, and foundation work has begun in earnest on the imminently 40-story and 500-foot-tall tower. The project is being designed by FX Collaborative and developed by Trinity Place Holdings.

Trinity Church’s Office Tower at 68-74 Trinity Place Making Headway in the Financial District

The steel superstructure for 68-74 Trinity Place is now rising quickly into the Financial District’s neighborhood skyline. Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, with Stephen B. Jacobs Group as the executive architect, the 26-story building is being developed by Trinity Real Estate, and will include around 310,000 square feet of rentable office space that will start from the seventh floor and continue up to the top of the nearly 500-foot-tall tower.

The Walt Disney Company Sets Eyes on 4 Hudson Square, Lower Manhattan

The Walt Disney Company’s chairman and CEO Robert A. Iger has announced the company’s future New York headquarters will encompass a full city block bounded by Hudson Street, Varick Street, Vandam and Spring Street, in Hudson Square. Rev. Dr. Willaim Lupher of Trinity Church sold the air rights, with the help of CBRE, allowing Disney to develop and take ownership of 4 Hudson Square for 99 years, at a cost of $650 million.

Marriott Hotel Nearly Complete at 151 Maiden Lane, Financial District

Located in the northeastern corner of Maiden Lane and Front Street, just south of the South Street Seaport District in Lower Manhattan, construction on 151 Maiden Lane is wrapping up, with the cladding of its tinted and angled blue glass now fully enclosing the building.

First Look For LeFrak’s Cantilevering 31 West 57th Street, Midtown Manhattan

Situated to the west of the Solow Building on a site that was once the home of the original Rizzoli Bookstore and several other low-slung buildings, 27-33 West 57th Street is one of the most prime sites on Billionare’s Row. The property is in the hands of developer LeFrak, and today YIMBY has the first look at what may eventually rise on the Midtown site in the near future.

First Look at Interiors for Condominium Conversion at 15 Jay Street, Tribeca

In the heart of Tribeca’s West Historic District, along the cobblestone roads, 15 Jay Street is undergoing an interior renovation of five lofts, set to be redesigned by the Meshberg Group. The developer is Jay Hudson LLC, while marketing is being led by Michael Brooks of MNS.

Renderings Revealed for The Belnord’s Renovation at 225 West 86th Street

World renowned architecture firm Robert A.M. Stern Architects is working on yet another project on the Upper West Side, and this time it’s the restoration and interior design for 225 West 86th Street, aka The Belnord. The building is just off of the 1 subway line between 86th Street and 87th Streets, and Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

Demolition Complete and Excavation Underway at 106 West 56th Street, Midtown

A proposed “boutique” office tower at 106 West 56th Street has begun excavation, where private equity firm Savanna Fund, along with Hong Kong based developer Atom Assets, plan to construct a 26-story tower. The site is located between 6th and 7th Avenues, just south of Billionaire’s Row.
