Demolition Progresses Rapidly at 116 Second Avenue, Site of East Village Fire

Demolition of the vacant 15-unit, five-story tenement building at 116 Second Avenue is underway after last Sunday’s massive six-alarm fire in the East Village that devastated the adjacent and historic 128-year-old Middle Collegiate Church. The building is now entirely razed and the site has been mostly cleared, with only a pile of brick remaining on the eastern end of the property.

Construction has passed the halfway mark at 601 West 29th Street, a 695-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Hudson Yards and number 20 on our countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in New York. Referred to as “Tower A” in a two-building development along with the adjacent 606 West 30th Street, the 58-story structure is designed by FXCollaborative for Douglaston Development and sits along Eleventh Avenue on the border of West Chelsea.

Demolition Progressing for SOM’s 62-Story Skyscraper at 12 West 57th Street in Midtown

Demolition is continuing at 12 West 57th Street in Midtown, the site of a 672-foot-tall skyscraper that comes in at number 21 on our countdown of the tallest projects underway in the city. The 52-story project is designed by Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill (SOM) and is being developed by Sheldon Solow of Solow Management Corp., who filed permits back in 2019. A preliminary rendering was revealed in early May, showing a slender black glass monolith rising behind a white glass and marbled stone podium. The development required the demolition of three low-rise structures spanning from 10 to 20 West 57th Street.

200 Amsterdam Avenue’s Exterior Nears Completion, on the Upper West Side

Exterior work is nearing completion on 200 Amsterdam Avenue, the Upper West Side’s current tallest skyscraper and number 22 on our countdown of the tallest projects underway in the city. Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects and developed by SJP Properties and Mitsui Fudosan America, the 668-foot-tall, 52-story structure will yield 283,000 square feet with interior design by CetraRuddy. The tower was the subject of intense NIMBY opposition earlier this year, culminating in a State Supreme Court ruling calling for a possible height reduction of 20 or more floors. However, the developers appealed the decision and construction continued as planned.

YIMBY Scopes Views From Rose Hill at 30 East 29th Street in NoMad

Façade work is getting closer to completion on Rose Hill, a 639-foot-tall residential skyscraper at 30 East 29th Street in NoMad and number 23 on YIMBY’s 2020 construction countdown. Designed by CetraRuddy Architecture and developed by Rockefeller Group, the 45-story reinforced concrete superstructure will yield 123 condominiums marketed by CORE Real Estate. The earth-tone envelope features a number of Art Deco-inspired motifs and architectural forms that aim to both blend with the Manhattan skyline while distinguishing it from other new nearby developments in the neighborhood. Sales have already launched for the homes ranging from one- to four-bedroom units and start at $1.385 million.
