Construction To Begin On The Fitzroy At 514 West 24th Street, Chelsea

For over a year, YIMBY has been reporting on plans for condominiums near the High Line at 514 West 24^th Street in Chelsea. Now, construction of the building, dubbed the Fitzroy, is set to commence. Permits have been approved, a source told YIMBY, which means work can start as soon as possible. The 10-story building will house 14 two- to five-bedroom units, plus ground floor retail. JDS Development Group and Largo Investments are the developers and Roman & Williams has designed the building. Sales have already launched, as has a website.

Midtown East’s Edgar J. Kaufman Conference Center Gets Landmarks Hearing

As the New York City Landmarks Preservation works to clear the backlog of items on its calendar for consideration since before 2010, it has mostly dealt with buildings, a.k.a. potential individual landmarks. However, there have been some interiors considered, such as the Osborne Apartments lobby. Another such case is the Edgar J. Kaufman Conference Center at 809 United Nations Plaza in Midtown East.

33-Story, 69-Unit Residential Tower Up To 14 Stories At 172 Madison Avenue, Midtown East

Over a year ago, YIMBY reported on schematic drawings for a 33-story, 69-unit mixed-use tower at 172 Madison Avenue, in Midtown East, and earlier this year, we revealed renderings of the Karl Fischer-designed building. Construction kicked off last spring and now the structure is 14 stories above street level, courtesy of photos by Tectonic. Although not apparent, glass installation has also begun. The building’s ground floor will feature 4,361 square feet of retail space, and condo units will average 1,795 square feet apiece. Tessler Development is developing and completion is expected in 2016.

33-Story Mixed-Use Hotel And Condo Tower Rises At 16 West 40th Street, Midtown

Back in September, the latest renderings were revealed of HFZ Capital Group’s 33-story mixed-use hotel and residential building planned at 12-20 West 40th Street, along Bryant Park in Midtown, and now Tectonic has the latest photos of its construction. The structure is currently six stories above street level and features a slight setback past the fifth floor. The first five floors are flush with the existing street wall. Upon completion in early 2017, The Bryant (not to be confused with the Bryant Park Hotel) will have 230 hotel rooms and 57 condos, as well as retail space and a restaurant on the ground floor. David Chipperfield is the design architect.

Three Historic Houses Considered at Landmarks Backlog Hearing

Last week, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held the fourth and final public hearing to deal with the 95 properties that have been under consideration for designation prior to 2010. Among the items discussed on Thursday were three houses, geographically spread from Kips Bay to Murray Hill to the Upper East Side. If designated as landmarks, they’ll certainly be referred to by many as historic houses. If not, their very existence will be put into doubt.

The Future Of The Flower District Is Up In The Air As New Developments Grow On West 28th Street

The single-purpose commercial district is a staple of the city’s urban patchwork, whether it is the Diamond District at 47th Street and Fifth Avenue in Midtown, the Lighting District along the Bowery, or the former Radio Row in Lower Manhattan. Just as the City Council considers creating a task force to study the impact of supertall towers near Central Park, Extell has filed plans for a comparatively modest 18-story building at 134 West 58th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

11-Story, 31-Unit Residential Project Rises At 522 West 29th Street, West Chelsea

Earlier this year, BBC News profiled Soo Chan, of Singapore-based SCDA Architects, which included news on his West Chelsea project at 522 West 29th Street, an 11-story, 31-unit luxury residential project. That building is now on the rise, courtesy of Tectonic, with concrete being poured for the third floor. According to BBC, 16 condominiums will feature private swimming pools, and a small 906 square-foot restaurant will be located on the ground floor. Siras Oriel Development is behind the project, and completion is expected towards the end of 2016.

Toll Brothers Plan a 133-Unit Building at 122 East 23rd Street in Gramercy

In December, Toll Brothers picked up the headquarters for United Cerebral Palsy of New York City for $135 million. Now the Pennsylvania-based developer has filed applications to erect an 18-story residential building on the site between Park and Lexington Avenues.
