Foundations Progress for FIT’s New Academic Building at 220 West 28th Street in Chelsea, Manhattan

Excavation and foundation work are progressing on Fashion Institute of Technology‘s New Academic Building at 220 West 28th Street in the Garment District of Chelsea. Designed by SHoP Architects, the ten-story, 110,000-square-foot structure is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, within walking distance of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, and Moynihan Train Hall. The New Academic Building is aiming for LEED Gold certification.

300 West 30th Street’s Envelope Progresses in Chelsea, Manhattan

Curtain wall installation is progressing on 300 West 30th Street, a 16-story residential building in Chelsea. Designed by Studio C Architects and developed by Hiwin USA, the property is located at the corner of West 30th Street and Eighth Avenue, a short walk from Madison Square Garden, Penn Station, and the new Moynihan Train Hall, and will yield 80 residential units and ground-floor retail space. The developer purchased the site from Salt Equities for $27.5 million in May 2018.

Below-grade work is progressing at 241 West 28th Street, a 22-story, 479-unit residential project in Chelsea. Designed by COOKFOX for MAG Partners, Atalaya, Safanad, and Qualitas, the two-tower development recently acquired $173 million in construction financing arranged by Maverick Commercial Properties. MAG Partners acquired the Midtown, Manhattan property in December 2018 and established a 99-year ground lease with Edison Properties. 241 West 28th Street is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and will have 30 percent of residential units reserved for low- and middle-income households. Urban Atelier Group is the general contractor.

1,100-Foot Supertall Proposed for 41-47 West 57th Street in Midtown, Manhattan

It looks like Billionaires’ Row is about to get another supertall in the near future. Plans for a mixed-use 1,100-foot-tall tower at 41-47 West 57th Street have been spotted according to the New York DOB, where the applicant, BOB 57, LLC., proposes a 63-story supertall with just under 443,100 square feet of newly built space. About 237,100 square feet will be devoted toward residential usage with 119 units, while nearly 205,100 square feet of commercial space will make room for a 158-room hotel and a 10,212-square-foot restaurant. The Midtown, Manhattan site is located between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and has frontage along both West 57th and West 58th Streets. This would be the tallest structure between SHoP Architects‘ 111 West 57th Street and Rafael Vinoly‘s 432 Park Avenue.
