111 West 57th Street Continues Rising as Glass, Bronze, and Terracotta Begin to Glisten

JDS Development and Property Markets Group’s 111 West 57th Street has been making substantial progress since YIMBY last checked in on the site back in August, and the soon-to-be 1,428-foot-tall tiwer continues to climb into the Midtown skyline. Glass curtain wall installation is now clearly visible and climbing on the southern side, and the supertall’s distinct terracotta and copper facade is also making major progress along the eastern face, which can be seen from street level.

Pelli Clarke Pelli-Designed 138 East 50th Street Tops Out at 800′, Midtown East

The last time YIMBY checked in on Ceruzzi Properties’ 138 East 50th Street in late August, the residential tower had just climbed past its 40th floor. Now, construction appears to have reached the parapet, 800 feet and 63 floors above the Midtown streets below, as seen in the latest update from Tectonic.

Renderings Revealed for 147-12 Roosevelt Avenue, Murray Hill, Queens

Permits have been filed for a four-story mixed-use building at 147-12 Roosevelt Avenue, in Murray Hill, Queens. The site is a block and a half away from the Murray Hill train station, serviced by the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Washington line. The Main Street Subway Station is another eight blocks away, which includes the last stop for the 7 train. Restaurants and retail storefronts are plentiful around both transit nodes. Ling Feng International will be responsible for the development.

Excavation Begins for Supertall 50 Hudson Yards, Demolition of Old Coach HQ Nears Finish Line

Related’s towers rising over the Eastern Railyards as part of the Hudson Yards redevelopment have been well over a decade in the making, but one block to the north, progress has been substantially faster on the redevelopment of the southwest corner of 34th Street and 10th Avenue. YIMBY previously reported that Mitsui Fudosan took a 90% ownership stake from Related as of early September, and now, excavation is underway.

Permits Filed For 157 West 24th Street, Chelsea

Permits have been filed for a 19-story hotel to be built at 157 West 24^th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenue, in Chelsea. The site is less than a block from a Whole Foods grocery store and has easy access to subway stations along 23rd Street, including the F and M trains on Sixth Avenue, the 1 and 2 trains on Seventh Avenue, and on Eighth Avenue, the C and E trains. Jin Sup An’s 157 West 24^th Street Lodging LLC will be responsible for development.

Permits Filed For 25-Story & 168-Room Hotel at 842 Sixth Avenue, Midtown

Filings have been submitted for a 25-story hotel at 842 6^th Avenue, in Midtown Manhattan, between 29^th Street and 30^th Street. Demolition permits have already been pulled for the existing seven-story building. The site is just a few blocks away from the Empire State Building, Penn Station, and Madison Square Park, and sits within the burgeoning Midtown South hotel corridor.

A new massing has been revealed for Related Companies’ 511-525 West 18^th Street and 500 West 19^th Street. The developer made headlines in 2014 with their move to purchase the site for $200 million, setting a record for the West Chelsea neighborhood, and moved forward with City Planning Approvals by the end of 2016.

New York City has a problem. As local politicians have consolidated their grip on power over the past several decades, many have become increasingly prone to serving specific groups of constituents instead of overarching ideals, noble, or otherwise. The Five Boroughs are no stranger to this kind of issue, with periods of historical stagnancy well-documented. But with electoral participation at staggeringly delegitimizing lows, local leaders like Gale Brewer will easily cruise to re-election. Amidst a backdrop of surging NIMBYism that is now more than glad to co-opt the tactics of Fake News, the outlook for the next few years on election day is rather bleak, as the politics of New York’s inward-looking regressive leaders will put up far greater barriers to entry than any potential wall along the Mexican border.

Permits have been filed for a new four-story mixed-use building at 555 West 22nd Street, in Chelsea. Related Companies is responsible for the project. Last time YIMBY reported on this site, the developer was in the process of acquiring 555 West 22nd Street, as well as 548 and 552 West 23rd Street. This permit only specifies for the lot on 22nd street, so the predicted 22-story building might still be in the works.

Demolition Permits Filed for Vornado’s Assemblage on Northeast Corner of 34th Street and 8th Avenue, Midtown

Applications have been filed for the demolition of three four-story buildings located one block north of Pennsylvania Station, in Midtown West. Vornado is responsible for the permits to level the structures, at 267 West 34th Street, 480 8th Avenue, and 486 8th Avenue.
