West 28th Street has been one of the hottest streets in Chelsea’s ongoing development boom for several years. With several buildings by Gene Kaufman already completed along the stretch, the former Flower District is about to see yet another new hotel open, this time, at 105 West 28th Street. The latest photos by JC_Heights show the tower has now passed the halfway point to its 35-story and 410-foot pinnacle.
As construction begins to make headway on new residential towers at 15 East 30th Street and 277 Fifth Avenue, just to the south, an actual supertall is in the works at 262 Fifth Avenue. Applications for the site were filed back in September of 2016, before it got a slight height boost to 1,001 feet. Now, demolition is complete on the site’s old occupant.
Back in March of 2016, YIMBY reported on new building applications for an assemblage at 200 East 21st Street, on the corner of Third Avenue, in Gramercy. Now, the new project, designed by BKSK Architects, has topped out 21 floors and 210 feet above the streets below. Alfa Development is behind the building, which will have 67 condominiums, and opening day is about a year out.
When it comes to the Manhattan skyline, 217 West 57th Street, aka Central Park Tower, will soon reign supreme, reaching 1,550 feet above the streets below. But a new concept proposed by DFA would provide Central Park with an actual tower of its own, though its existence would be limited to a temporary duration.
Most of the hotels coming to Chelsea are on the larger side of things, but today, YIMBY has the reveal for a smaller project that is in the works for 20 West 15th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues on the southern edge of the neighborhood. YIMBY first reported on the site when applications were filed back in August of 2014, when we asked when the hotel madness overtaking the area would stop (three years later, it rages unchecked).
