Just over a year ago, renderings were unveiled for a public art piece in one of the most anticipated developments in New York City, Hudson Yards. The images revealed “Vessel,” an enormous, intricate structure that many believe is guaranteed to become a new city landmark, designed by Thomas Heatherwick.
On the eastern side of Lexington Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets, in the heart of Midtown, a new residential rental tower has topped-out. YIMBY revealed the design back in 2014 before permits were pulled in early 2015. C3D Architecture is behind the project’s design, which currently looks markedly different from what’s rendered, though that may not be the case for much longer.
Last week, YIMBY featured a terrible new hotel coming to 525 Eighth Avenue, off the northwest corner of 34th Street and Eighth Avenue. A few blocks to the north and west, on the southwest corner of Ninth Avenue and 42nd Street, another architectural atrocity is getting ready to open its doors, at 577 Ninth Avenue, and Tectonic has the latest photos of progress.
The Midtown Plateau’s block-to-block coverage of behemoth skyscrapers knows no rivals in terms of sheer density, which is why it is increasingly difficult for towers to penetrate above the still-rapidly-growing thicket. But at an imminent height of 1,050 feet, and after ten years of watching and waiting, the Jean Nouvel-designed 53 West 53rd Street is about to do exactly that.

The project, given the address of 8 West 30th Street, then wound its way through the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Now, the Moshe Safdie design has been ditched for an office tower by Bjarke Ingels of BIG Architects.
