Located at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and 44th Drive, the corner lot is near several subway stations, including Court Square, serviced by the G and 7 trains; Court Square-23 Street, serviced by the E and M trains; and Queens Plaza, serviced by the E, M, and R trains. In a master plan created in part by the city’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC), 12,000 affordable apartments could be built over Sunnyside Yard in Queens. If it comes to fruitrition, it would be the largest recent development of affordable housing, to the tune of an estimated $14.4 billion. The hefty price includes the deck over the rail yard on which the residential buildings will sit, as well as the streetscape and infrastructure for utilities, a new rail station for commuter trains, multiple schools and libraries, commercial space for offices, manufacturing, and retail, and 60 acres of open space and public parks.
The new dome addition atop 44 Union Square, the former headquarters of Tammany Hall, is now fully enclosed in glass. The renovation and addition project is designed by BKSK Architects. Reading International (RDI) is the developer and Edifice Real Estate Partners is the owners representative. CNY Group is in charge of construction on the historic building, which overlooks Union Square.
The Hudson County Improvement Authority has revealed new renderings of a sprawling courthouse complex designed by award-winning architect Rafael Viñoly. Set to debut in Jersey City by 2023, the Frank J. Guarini Justice Complex will replace the existing Hudson County Administration Building at 595 Newark Avenue with a mix of judicial spaces and public grounds.
