New Look at Related’s West Side Yards, at Hudson Yards

The Hudson Yards project has taken decades to get off the ground, but construction is well underway on the site’s first few buildings, with the superstructure for 10 Hudson Yards already making an impact on the skyline. While the Eastern railyards will be impressive in their own right, the Western railyards are a bit further down the development pipeline, but Related has created a new set of conceptual towers that illustrate their potential, posted in an update to the Hudson Yards website.

Tamarkin Plans Residential Conversion of Six-Story 555 West End Avenue, Upper West Side

Curbed reports that Cary Tamarkin is planning a residential conversion and expansion of 555 West End Avenue, a six-story structure on the Upper West Side, at West 87th Street. The building was acquired for $50 million last October, and Tamarkin is also designing the project, which will be presented before the LPC later this month.

Residential Redevelopment Planned at 626-630 5th Avenue, Park Slope

Brownstoner reports the three contiguous properties spanning 626-630 5th Avenue, in Park Slope, are being redeveloped into 26 to 28 residential units by their new owner, George Malafis. His development plans have not yet been filed with the DOB, but the existing buildings rise three stories and amount to 22,500 square feet. The current retail tenant is expecting to move out in the coming weeks.

Nine-Unit Building To Replace Small Abode at 90-05 56th Avenue, Elmhurst

102-08 Holding Inc. has filed applications for a four-story, nine-unit residential building at 90-05 56th Avenue, in southern Elmhurst. The building will measure roughly 6,400 square feet, and an existing two-story abode must first be demolished. Chang Hwa Tan, of Tan Architect PC, is the architect of record.

Permits Filed: 15-Story Apartment Building at 111 Varick Street, Hudson Square

Madigan Development has filed plans for a 15-story apartment building at 111 Varick Street, on the corner of Broome Street in Hudson Square, just west of Soho.

Four-Family Townhouse Planned for 1342 Prospect Avenue in Foxhurst, South Bronx

Ben Shavolian, the head of L’Ermitage LLC, has filed applications for a four-story, four-unit residential building at the vacant lot at 1342 Prospect Avenue, in the Foxhurst section of the south Bronx. The building will measure 4,770 square feet, and Gerald Caliendo is designing. The site’s two-story predecessor was demolished by the HDP in 1994.

Seven-Story Rental To Fill Long Vacant Lot At 1613 Mermaid Avenue, Coney Island

An LLC has filed applications for a seven-story, 16-unit residential building at the empty lot at 1613 Mermaid Avenue, on Coney Island. Measuring nearly 11,290 square feet in total, the average unit will be a little over 700 square feet, indicating rentals are likely in the works. Miele Associates is designing the new structure, which will hopefully rise on the long-vacant lot.

217 West 57th Street and One World Trade Center

The current race to the top of the skyline is the most impressive in New York City’s history, with ever-taller skyscrapers sprouting from the Financial District all the way to 57th Street. And YIMBY has now learned that 217 West 57th Street, aka the Nordstrom Tower, received a height boost between April and June of last year, pushing the tower’s pinnacle to 1,795 feet. That will make it the tallest building in New York City, the United States, and the Western Hemisphere.

The Toll Brothers’ 30-story condo project at 959 First Avenue is rising fast and starting to get its brick facade. The 90-unit tower launched sales last month, and now YIMBY reader Tectonic has photos of its contextual exterior.
