A synagogue whose structure served varied purposes before becoming a house of worship will be getting a somewhat unusual expansion and facelift. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a proposal from the Conservative Synagogue of Fifth Avenue, located at 11 East 11th Street, between Fifth Avenue and University Place in Greenwich Village.
Developers are always looking further east and south for cheap property in Brooklyn, and a combination of generous zoning and inexpensive land have encouraged several new residential projects in East Flatbush. One of those developments is set to rise at 309 Lenox Road, between Nostrand and New York Avenues.
When YIMBY last visited the site of the 192-room hotel at 100 Greenwich in October 2015, the 25-story tower’s foundations were only beginning to take shape. Rebar was being laid out for the concrete foundation mat at the rear on the site, while the front portion was still under excavation. Three months later, the building is yet to breach ground level, but its foundations are virtually complete.
The Ziegfeld, a 1,300-seat, single-screen movie theater at 141 West 54th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues in Midtown, is expected to be transformed into an event venue, according to the New York Post. The converted building, to be renamed Ziegfeld Ballroom, will offer a column-free, 10,000 square-foot ballroom, meetings rooms on a mezzanine level, and “advanced electronic facilities.” The well-known movie theater will close within the next few weeks, at which time its tenant, Cablevision, will cut operations. The conversion is expected to be complete in 2017. Fisher Brothers is the building’s leaseholder.
In April of 2014, YIMBY revealed renderings of the eight-story, 32-unit mixed-use project at 1770 Madison Avenue, in East Harlem on the corner of East 116th Street. Later the same year, the building topped out, and today the structure is fully clad and wrapping up construction, Harlem+Bespoke reports. The building measures 47,857 square feet in its entirety, and includes 5,124 square feet of retail on the ground and cellar levels, 6,310 square feet of medial offices on the second floor, and 25,241 square feet of residential space. The units will average 789 square feet apiece, and seven of them will rent at below-market rates through the housing lottery. Low Income Marketing Group is developing and Avinash K. Malhotra Architects is the architect of record. Opening is probable within the next few weeks.
