The IFC Center movie theater on Sixth Avenue (at West 3rd Street) is one step closer to an expansion that would double the number of screens and alleviate crowding on the sidewalk. This would be accomplished by expanding to an empty lot located behind it at 14-16 Cornelia Street. On Tuesday, the proposal went before the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the commissioners could have approved the upper floors, but wanted more work done at street level.
Construction is nearly complete at 325 West Broadway in Soho, where a ten-story condo building has replaced part of a brick chocolate factory. Developer and design firm DDG has just launched sales, and they’ve sent along a few new renderings of the project, which was christened Xoco 325 in June.
A townhouse that dates back to the 19th century will be getting a decidedly modern rear, thanks to Tuesday’s approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The five-story home at 39 East 67th Street, in the East Side Historic District, will be getting an entirely new rear facade, a reconfigured roof, and restorative work on the front facade.
The city’s Human Resources Administration has filed new building applications to erect a 12-story affordable housing development at 413 East 120th Street, next to the Robert F. Wagner Houses at the eastern edge of Harlem.
Locals are rallying for the Department of Education to consider building a new middle school at the vacant city lot at 47-99 37th Avenue, in Sunnyside, adjacent to the LIRR tracks. The lot measures 125,000 square feet and is currently being used to store equipment and street parts, per the Sunnyside Post. The area has one middle school, which is currently being expanded by 600 seats, although future accommodation of students will be needed if Long Island City’s rapid development spreads any further east.
